If filled at the Engineer Technician I, Grade 17, the hiring range is $59,897-$71,913.
If filled at the Engineer Technician II, Grade 18, the hiring range is $62,328-$89,891.
This position may be underfilled as an Engineer Technician I, Grade 17. Once the employee is at full performance and meets the minimum requirements of the Proficiency Advancement process, they are eligible for the non-competitive promotion through the series to the Engineer Technician II, Grade 18.

Who we are looking forMCDOT seeks an Engineer Technician I/II to join its Traffic Signal Engineering team. This position will be based within the Division of Transportation Engineering and Operations (DTEO), under the Transportation Management Section.
This is entry-level traffic engineering technician work of a paraprofessional nature. Work focuses on constructing, modifying, and maintaining traffic signal devices and Intelligent Transportation System (ITS) devices as part of the County's Advanced Transportation Management System (ATMS).
The ideal candidate is a detail-oriented problem-solver who can create innovative solutions. Good organizational skills are essential to tracking and managing projects. Good interpersonal and communication skills are a significant advantage to a person in this position. Computer skills, especially with Microsoft Office applications, are desired, along with good customer service skills to help resolve residents' concerns.
Responsibilities- Prepares traffic signal documents, including but not limited to signal pole locations, traffic signal indication location and configuration, traffic signal phasing, timing and sequence, pavement markings, and intersection-related signing.
- Conduct traffic evaluations and field investigations to review traffic safety and/or operational improvements requests.
- Coordinate and inspect the installation and modification of traffic control devices.
- Prepare work orders to arrange installation and modifications of traffic control devices.
- Coordinate work activities with the Transportation Management Center (TMC), the Technical Center, and other work units within MCDOT.
- Review and submit comments regarding traffic signal plans offered by the Maryland State Highway Administration and engineering consultants for the County or developers based on the department's guidelines and principles, and the guiding principles as presented in the Manual of Uniform Traffic Control Devices.
- Answer telephone inquiries, letters, and emails, and respond to other agency/citizen requests related to signal operations. Projects or programs.
- Perform field investigations of traffic signal operations.
The individual selected for this position will be considered an Essential Employee, and overtime work will be required. Essential employees must report to work during a general emergency or on liberal leave.
Additional RequirementsTo ensure a positive workplace and to comply with federal, state, and County laws, the incumbent is responsible for completing mandatory training within the first three to six months or within the specified timeframe.
Engineer Technician IExperience
:
Considerable (three (3) years) experience in an applicable technical field that has required the application of principles of physical science and mathematics to assist engineers in solving civil, traffic, or environmental engineering problems.
Education
:
Completion of high school or High School Certificate of completion recognized in the State of Maryland.
Equivalency
:
An equivalent combination of education and experience may be substituted.
