Summary Description

Under direction of the school principal and special education supervisor, the special education teacher provides direct instruction and instructional support to students with disabilities and works in collaboration with the general education teacher. Monitors and evaluates outcomes for students with disabilities. Assists in the development of Individualized Education Programs (IEP).

As required by the duties and responsibilities of the job.

Special Requirements:
Required to attend school meetings, programs, and activities outside the instructional day as mandated by the Montgomery County Education Association agreement. Teachers employed in special education schools or discrete special education service models are required to successfully complete specific courses provided by MCPS, particularly in behavioral management including nonviolent crisis intervention. Teachers in these identified schools and programs will be required to support behavioral interventions.

Knowledge,

Skills & Abilities

Knowledge of the MCPS curriculum for the grade/content range of the position, MCPS special education program. Thorough knowledge of IEP, learning theory, differentiated instruction, data collection, best instructional practices, research‑based reading instruction, multicultural education, assessments. Knowledge of methods of teaching elementary math if seeking an elementary position. Understanding of ESSA 2015, IDEA 2004, and state/federal policies related to special education. Ability to provide instructional support, adapt programs and materials, work well with students, teachers, and parents/guardians, and effectively communicate.

Knowledge of the six performance standards of the MCPS Teacher Professional Growth System (TPGS).

Education, Training & Experience

Bachelor’s degree from an accredited college or university in special education. Fluency in learning theory, differentiated instruction, developmental reading, child development, applied behavior analysis, and assessment. Student teaching in the specific area of exceptionality or two years of teaching experience at a level appropriate to assignment (elementary or secondary). Other combinations of applicable education, training, and experience will be considered. Certificate license:
Meets Maryland State Department of Education certification requirements for Standard Professional Certification I (SPC I) in special education. Certification in a content area is desirable.
