Position Overview

The Safety Manager is responsible for leading and managing safety performance across assigned projects and business units for a General Contractor. This role serves as a key safety resource at the project, business unit, and corporate levels
, supporting operations through proactive risk management, regulatory compliance, and continuous improvement of the company’s safety culture. The Safety Manager independently assesses project safety needs, deploys appropriate resources, mentors safety and operations personnel, and supports corporate safety initiatives while maintaining strong relationships with project teams and subcontractors.

Key Responsibilities Leadership & Team Management
  • Manage workloads and staffing levels for direct reports based on project volume and risk profile
  • Conduct regular check‑ins, annual performance reviews, and career development discussions
  • Assess training needs and provide coaching, mentoring, and technical guidance to safety staff
  • Support recruiting, onboarding, retention, and development of safety personnel
  • Manage and evaluate performance of third‑party safety consultants as needed
Project & Business Unit Safety Oversight
  • Determine and fulfill safety needs across multiple projects and/or business units
  • Conduct independent site safety inspections and audits using digital safety platforms
  • Evaluate inspection quality and performance of safety staff and project team members
  • Review and enforce compliance with federal, state, local, corporate, and client safety requirements
  • Identify and address safety risks associated with upcoming and future project scopes
  • Evaluate subcontractor safety performance and enforce corrective actions when required
Data, Compliance & Continuous Improvement
  • Analyze inspection, incident, and near‑miss data to identify trends and improvement opportunities
  • Establish inspection criteria, expectations, and performance metrics
  • Distribute inspection reports, open-item summaries, and trend analyses to project stakeholders
  • Research and interpret current and upcoming OSHA regulations impacting project work
  • Serve as lead for OSHA or third‑party safety inspections
  • Prepare monthly safety summaries for assigned projects or business units
Training, Planning & Field Support
  • Lead or support incident and crisis response, including investigations and root‑cause analysis
  • Develop, review, and approve common and complex Job Hazard Analyses (JHAs)
  • Support safety planning during preconstruction and lead subcontractor safety meetings as needed
  • Develop and deliver project‑specific safety orientations and toolbox talks
  • Coach project teams on effective delivery of safety meetings and inspections
  • Provide just‑in‑time and targeted safety training based on project needs
  • Identify and source specialized safety equipment and training resources
Corporate & Cross‑Functional Support
  • Contribute to corporate safety initiatives, goals, and committees
  • Act as a technical safety resource for project teams and safety staff
  • Collaborate with Risk Management and other corporate functions as needed
  • Maintain positive working relationships with clients, subcontractors, and project teams
  • Respond to safety concerns raised by clients, tenants, or members of the public
  • Participate in professional safety and construction organizations
Qualifications
  • Bachelor’s degree in Safety, Construction Management, Engineering, or related field (preferred)
  • CHST, CSP, or equivalent professional safety certification required
  • OSHA 30 Construction required;
    OSHA 500 preferred
  • First Aid / CPR certification
  • Minimum of 5 years of construction safety experience with a degree, or 8+ years without
  • Strong technical knowledge of high‑risk construction activities (cranes, fall protection, scaffolding, excavation, electrical)
  • Excellent written and verbal communication skills
  • Ability to prioritize and manage multiple projects and competing demands
  • Strong analytical, research, and problem‑solving skills
  • Ability to work independently and respond to emergency or crisis situations
  • Physically able to navigate construction sites, including stairs, ladders, uneven terrain, and varying environmental conditions
  • Demonstrates and models safe work practices at all times
