SummarySurgical technologists, also called scrubs and operating room technicians, assist in surgical operations under the supervision of surgeons, registered nurses, or other surgical personnel. They are members of operating room teams that include surgeons, anesthesiologists, and circulating nurses.
Key Responsibilities- Prepare and maintain medical equipment for surgical procedures.
- Help prepare the operating room before an operation by setting up surgical instruments, equipment, sterile drapes, and solutions.
- Follow hospital regulations and industry procedures to tend to the patient during pre‑operation procedures.
- Prepare the patient’s skin, body, and equipment for surgery, including washing, shaving, and disinfecting incision sites.
- Transport patients to the operating room, help position them on the surgical table, and cover them with sterile drapes.
- Observe patients’ vital signs, check charts, and assist the surgical team with donning sterile gowns and gloves.
- Pass instruments and sterile supplies to surgeons and assistants.
- Hold retractors, cut sutures, count sponges, needles, supplies, and instruments, and help prepare, care for, and dispose of surgical specimens.
- Operate sterilizers, lights, suction machines, or diagnostic equipment as needed.
- Assist with patient transfer to the recovery room after surgery and clean and restock the operating room.
- Perform other duties as assigned.
- Graduate of an accredited surgical technologist program.
- Must be certified to perform CPR.
- 0–2 years of clinical experience in a related field.
