The University of Florida School of Music seeks a highly qualified individual for the role of Director of Bands and Director of the Wind Symphony at the rank of Associate or Full Professor. The appointment is a nine‑month position with summer stipends. The initial total compensation is expected to be approximately $120,000. Candidates should possess a deep understanding of wind band traditions, a commitment to creative programming, and awareness of contemporary developments in the field.
Responsibilities- Program, rehearse, and conduct a fall and spring‑semester series of wind symphony concerts.
- Oversee all operations of the band area, including budget development, staff appointments, and coordination of personnel.
- Represent the Band Area within the College of the Arts, the University of Florida, and alumni relations.
- Teach courses in wind conducting and related subjects.
- Recruit talented graduate and undergraduate students and engage in committee service as appropriate.
- Integrate the program into the cultural life of the University and the Gainesville community.
- Serve as Musical Director and Conductor of the Wind Symphony.
- Oversee Doctor of Musical Arts and Master of Music degrees in wind band conducting.
- Teach graduate conducting and wind literature courses for conducting majors.
- Maintain an active national and international creative research profile consistent with expectations of tenure and promotion.
- Participate in shared governance through service to the School, College, and University.
- Provide musical and administrative vision to a comprehensive university bands program.
- Oversee budget, scholarship allocation, staff appointment, and personnel management for multiple concert and athletic bands.
- Represent the Band Area to external stakeholders and alumni.
- Terminal degree in Music with a distinguished record of professional and academic achievement.
- Distinguished record of achievement at a national or international level.
- Evidence of skill in designing and facilitating academic work that promotes curiosity, respect, and inclusive discourse.
- Well versed in wind band traditions, creative programming, and current trends.
- Commitment to the advancement of new music, including commissions and world premieres.
- Teaching experience of 5–10 years at the assistant professor rank or higher at the university level.
- Record of effective mentoring and recruitment of MM and DMA graduate student conductors.
- Strong organizational, management, and communication skills.
- Demonstrated success in negotiation and collaboration toward creative and administrative goals.
- Outstanding musicianship, technical conducting skills, and student‑focused rehearsal practices.
