Job Description

Successful candidates must be able to facilitate traditional camp activities (workshops, field trips, recreational activities) and facilitate rainy‑day alternative activities in the event of inclement weather. They must also be able to support camping programmatic responsibilities related to positive youth development and program planning related to overall organizational systems.

Summer camp staff will work with the 4‑H Extension Agent and the 4‑H Program Assistant to make all reasonable efforts to meet affirmative action compliance standards and University of Florida’s Youth Protection Policy, which includes adherence to policies regarding direct supervision and transport of minors ages 8 to 18 years. Successful candidates must be able to enforce rules to guide, conduct and safeguard the health and safety of youth and volunteer leaders.

Travel includes taking youth to and from camp within the county and surrounding areas. Camp staff must adapt quickly and positively to schedule changes, demonstrate willingness and ability to learn the principles of positive youth development, life skills development, and the mission of Florida 4-H. They may be required to perform other work‑related duties as assigned by the 4‑H Extension Agent and/or the County Extension Director.

Develop knowledge of 4-H youth development subject matter, become proficient in compliance standards for youth programming through orientation training, continuous on‑the‑job training, and self‑study. Learn and understand the emergency and risk management policies and procedures as they apply to the facility and program participants. Maintain a clean and appropriate work appearance within the parameters of the Florida 4-H Camping Dress Code.

Required Qualifications

Applicants must be at least 18 years of age and have a strong understanding of 4-H and/or conducting educational programs.

Preferred Qualifications
  • High school diploma or equivalent strongly desired
  • Experience coordinating and implementing education programs is strongly desired
  • Possess Lifeguard and CPR/First Aid training and certification
  • Ability to work with and instruct youth through innovative and non‑formal methods
  • Experience working with diverse youth and adult audiences; work cooperatively with other summer camp staff and office personnel
  • Ability to interact with the public in a positive and effective manner to establish and maintain effective working relationships
  • Skill in the use of standard office equipment and computer software applications/equipment
Special Instructions to Applicants

Work conditions – exposure to outdoor weather, field conditions, extreme noises, odors, and/or dust.

Risk and safety conditions – exposure or risk to physical health and/or physical safety (e.g., instructional use of firearms, occasional work with livestock, watercraft equipment).

Essential physical activities – stooping, sitting, crouching, walking, grasping, hearing, talking, seeing up close and far, kneeling, reaching, pulling, standing, finger movement, repetitive motions, depth perception. May require frequent lifting and pushing of 10–25 pounds and occasional lifting and pushing of up to 50 pounds.

Policy Making and/or Interpretation

Work with immediate supervisor and 4‑H personnel when implementing policies pertaining to interactions with youth.

Communication

Contacts are typically with 4‑H families, co‑workers, county personnel, and members of the general public to provide services, give or exchange information, or resolve problems.

Collect and protect confidential information pertaining to youth member enrollment/health records.
