A Parent Educator implements the Parents as Teachers (PAT) model, emphasizing parent-child interaction, development-centered parenting and family well-being in their work with families. Utilizing the PAT Foundational Curriculum in culturally sensitive ways, the parent educator partners, facilitates and reflects with families. The Parent Educator is responsible for delivering all components of the PAT model using the PAT curriculum, implementing the Essential Requirements and Quality Assurance Guidelines with fidelity, and collecting all data required by the Maternal Infant Early Childhood Home Visitation (MIECHV) Initiative and Parents as Teachers.

The position is responsible for identifying and assessing potential clients for program eligibility. The Parent Educator interacts extensively with community organizations supporting children and families.

The incumbent must renew Parent Educator Certification annually. Position will utilize a personal vehicle in order to drive to homes and community sites to meet with families in Bradford, Columbia, Hamilton and Putnam counties.

Key Responsibilities
  • Maintain a caseload of 20 high-need families with a minimum of bi-weekly visits for each enrolled family.
  • Provide personal visits focused on parent-child interaction development-centered parenting and family well-being.
  • Complete an initial and annual family-centered assessment (Life Skills Progression) with each family.
  • Implement the PAT Program with model fidelity and participate in continuous quality improvement.
  • Develop, monitor and review goals with each family.
  • Connect families to resources that help them reach their goals and address their needs and provide follow-up and ongoing support.
  • Prepare for personal visits: read parent educator resources; print appropriate handouts; gather materials for parent-child activities.
  • Complete developmental screening (ASQ-3 and ASQ-SE) and health review including health, vision, and hearing screening for each enrolled child.
  • Administer the Perceived Stress Scale, Edinburgh Postnatal Depression Scale, and Relationship Assessment Tool.
  • Clearly document details of each visit, assessment, screening, and follow-up resources on forms; enter information into FLOHVIS (Florida Home Visiting Information System) data system after each visit.
  • Maintain and submit in a timely manner all required PAT program documentation and MIECHV data collection requirements.
  • Organize and inventory incentive supplies and educational materials.
  • Participate in at least 2 hours of reflective supervision monthly and at least 2 hours of staff meetings monthly.
  • Participate in related community activities and perform other related duties as required.
  • Engage in recruitment activities (as applicable).
Key Qualifications
  • Bachelor's degree in an appropriate area and two years of relevant experience; or an equivalent combination of education and experience.
  • Completion of Parents as Teachers Foundation and Model Implementation Trainings before delivering PAT services.
  • Renew Parent Educator Certification annually.
  • Valid driver's license, reliable vehicle, and current car insurance.
  • Bilingual (Spanish) candidates highly desired; ability to read, write and speak fluent Spanish.
  • Strong communication and interpersonal skills, e.g., nonjudgmental, objective, reflective, empathic, tactful.
  • Strong organizational and record keeping skills.
  • Ability to work independently and be self-motivated.
  • High proficiency in the use of computer software programs and data bases.
  • A general knowledge of child nutrition, health, safety and special needs and knowledge of community resources for families.
  • Supervised experience working with young children and/or parents is recommended.
