Job Summary

The Counselor in Training (CIT) position is for candidates who are 15 years or older who have an interest working with children in a camp setting but may not have any prior work experience or meet the minimum requirements of the Camp Counselor position. Under the direction of the camp Leadership Team, CITs provide leadership and guidance to campers through a variety of games, crafts, sports, outdoor exploration and other activities.

CITs may assist with supervision of campers, lead programs based on pre-arranged activities/recreational themes, help with set up and tidying of activity areas, engage/play with campers during free times, and assist with other routine functions such as camper check-in/out and completion of daily checklists.

Essential Job Functions
  • Assists Camp Counselors and the Camp Leadership Team in supervising campers and leading activities as part of the day camp experience.
  • Acts as a role model to camp participants, co-workers, and camp parents in both attitude and appropriate behavior, remaining professional and respectful, as described in the staff manual.
  • Follows all camp policies and procedures, as described in the staff manual.
  • Provides positive customer service.
  • Performs other related duties and special projects as assigned.
  • Regular, predictable, and punctual attendance is required.
Minimum Qualifications

Any combination of education, training and experience which provides the required knowledge, skills, and abilities to perform the essential functions of the job.

Experience
  • Minimum 15 years of age.
Licensure Or Certification Requirements
  • CPR, First Aid, and AED Certificate preferred

  • Monitoring safety of participants in the area or function assigned.
  • Demonstrate enthusiasm while leading, assisting, and/or actively participating in all program areas, as assigned.
  • General upkeep of equipment and supplies in the area or function assigned.
  • Be available for camp staff trainings prior to the camp season and for in-service trainings/meetings during the camp season; some of these may occur outside of regularly scheduled program hours.

  • Exert up to 20 pounds of force occasionally, up to 10 pounds of force frequently, and a negligible amount of force constantly to move objects; work requires stooping, reaching, walking, grasping and repetitive motions.
  • Vocal communication is required for expressing or exchanging ideas by means of the spoken word.
  • Hearing is required to perceive information at normal spoken word levels;
  • Visual acuity is required for preparing and analyzing written or computer data, visual inspection involving small defects and/or small parts, operation of motor vehicles or equipment, determining the accuracy and thoroughness of work, and observing general surrounding and activities.
Working Conditions
  • Work is performed outdoors in hot or cold temperatures. Some work may occur in a normal office environment with little exposure to outdoor temperatures or dirt and dust.

Seasonal employees are eligible to participate in the Ohio Public Employment Retirement (OPERS).
