Camp Counselor
Job Summary The Camp Counselor position is for applicants who are 17 years or older and preferably have completed one year of college or equivalent life experience in recreation, education, childcare, or a closely related field. Camp Counselors actively organize, plan, and implement all aspects of summer day camp programs for youth of various ages in City of Gahanna parks. Structured activities include sports, games, outdoor education, arts and creativity, special presentations, off‑site trips, and swimming pool visits, with free time for campers to choose their own activities.
Responsibilities- Ensure the safety and well‑being of camp participants and staff, adhering to all camp policies, procedures and emergency protocols.
- Act as a role model to camp participants, co‑workers, and parents, demonstrating professional and respectful behavior.
- Maintain camper supervision and discipline in a manner consistent with policies.
- Abide by all mandatory reporting and communication policies.
- Evaluate camp programs and provide constructive feedback to support staff and supervisors.
- Participate in the development and implementation of program activities aligned with the camp mission.
- Demonstrate enthusiasm while leading, assisting, and actively participating in all program areas.
- Maintain high standards of cleanliness, health, and safety, adhering to American Camp Association standards.
- Be alert to equipment and facilities, ensuring proper care and reporting needed repairs.
- Provide parents/guardians and the public appropriate feedback and information when addressing questions and concerns.
- Be available for pre‑camp staff trainings and in‑service trainings/meetings during the season.
- Maintain a positive, inclusive atmosphere that encourages staff collaboration and camper engagement.
- Other duties as assigned.
- Work independently and supervise others as needed.
- Communicate necessary directions to campers and staff.
- Document and update camp records and logs accurately.
- Respond to environmental hazards and assist staff and participants in emergencies.
- First Aid/CPR/AED certification or willingness to obtain.
- Valid Ohio driver’s license with an acceptable driver’s abstract.
- Minimum 17 years of age at the start of employment.
- Willingness to work under direct supervision.
- Completion of at least one year of college or equivalent life experience is typical.
- Conflict resolution and behavior management.
- Team building, engagement techniques, and positive behavior management.
- Basic recreation principles and youth development knowledge.
- Strong communication skills.
- Physical ability to lift up to 50 pounds and maintain constant supervision of participants.
- Adaptability to varying weather and outdoor conditions.
- Primary location outdoors; exposed to extreme cold, heat, noise, vibration, and atmospheric conditions.
- Medium physical effort including climbing, stooping, kneeling, crouching, reaching, pushing, pulling, lifting, and repetitive motions.
- Seasonal role eligible for Ohio Public Employment Retirement (OPERS).
