What You'll Be Doing

This includes all unincorporated areas of Wake County, the Wake County Public School System, and for the Towns of Knightdale, Rolesville, Wendell and Zebulon. You could join our team in several different ways:
- As a General Building Inspector
- As a Senior Building Inspector
- Starting pay based on experience and certifications ranging from $26.54/hr. to $41.59/hr.
- Two years’ experience in the construction industry.
- Note:
If you hold a 4-year degree in an architectural, engineering or construction-related field you can qualify for a probationary Level II certificate.
- Starting pay based on experience and certifications ranging from $29.60/hr. to $50.33/hr.
- Must hold a Standard Level III Building Inspections certificate
- Five years of experience in the construction industry.

- You will spend most of your time in the field with limited supervision
- Assist customers by reviewing construction plans to verify compliance with the North Carolina Technical Codes and Wake County ordinances
- Answer questions related to building codes, and Wake County procedures, policies, and development ordinances
- Troubleshoot site development issues and collaborate in pre-submittal meetings
- Regular communication with architects, engineers, and designers to eliminate possible code violations
- Work directly with homeowners to help them understand the various requirements
Inspectors are based out of one of three Regional Centers located throughout the County.
About Our TeamWake County Permitting and Inspections, a part of Planning, Development and Inspections Division provides building inspection and permitting services for all unincorporated areas of Wake County as well as the Wake County Public Schools System regardless of jurisdiction and, through contractual agreements, provides building inspection services for the towns of Knightdale, Rolesville, Wendell and Zebulon.
The Basics (RequiredEducation and Experience )
- High school diploma or GED
- Two years of experience in the construction industry
- Standard Level II Code Official Certification required in Building trades within 4 years of hire
- Valid Driver's License and "safe" driving record
- Equivalent education and experience are accepted

Beyond the Basics (PreferredEducation and Experience )
- Possession or the ability to possess a Plumbing, Mechanical and Electrical Probationary Level I
- Certification issued by the North Carolina Code Officials Qualification Board
- Previous inspection and/or construction experience (Electrical experience a plus)
- Applicants should have or be able to receive certification within four years from the North Carolina Code Qualifications Board Standard for Level II certificates in all three trades
- Ability to read and understand construction drawings and specifications
- General knowledge of residential and commercial construction practices
- Technical knowledge of the building construction trade
- Ability to communicate well both orally and in writing
