Summer Camp Head Counselor

The Town of Fuquay-Varina Parks, Recreation & Cultural Resources Department seeks a dedicated individual for the position of Summer Camp Head Counselor. The Head Counselor works closely with Camp Counselors, parents, and the Recreation Division to deliver a fun, safe, and impactful summer camp experience for children who have completed grades K-5.

This position requires a North Carolina SBI criminal history record check based on responsibilities involving work with or around children under 18 years of age. The results of this record check will be used in the hiring decision.

• Provides leadership and guidance for campers, ensuring quality experience for children and parents.
• Creates positive, nurturing relationships with children, while building cooperative relationships with parents and/or caregivers.
• Responsible for overseeing and assisting counselors with the planning, development, and implementation of program activities.
• Knows, enforces, and follows all safety guidelines associated with the camp program.
• Assists in maintaining accurate program records, including incident reports, medication/sunscreen logs, daily attendance, and authorized pick-up documentation.
• Conducts primary parent/guardian communication regarding camper disciplinary actions, injuries, and accidents.
• Supervises all field trips and acts as a liaison with each field trip site.
• Create weekly staff schedule, activity schedule, and parent information sheet.

• Knowledge of: development needs of youth; behavior management techniques; safety regulations and emergency procedures; effective supervisory and management principles and practices.
• Skilled in: handling sensitive information and maintaining confidentiality; team building; preparing budget analysis, cost projections and cost-benefit analyses; training, evaluating and instructing staff.
• Ability to: motivate staff; communicate effectively with all levels of camp staff to address the needs of campers; interact with parents whose children have become a behavioral issue.

• Must have ability to perceive audio & visual alerts for emergency purposes.
• Must be able to sit or stand for long periods of time.
• Be able to participate in physical activity for various amounts of time. (Walking, outdoor activities, demonstrating game skills, etc.)

• High School Diploma
• Valid NC Driver’s License
• Reliable Transportation
• Ability to work 40 hours/week
• Previous Employment experiences as a summer camp counselor, childcare provider, or early childhood educator preferred

• Hourly rate will be determined by experience.

Tentative start date:
June 8th, 2026.

Camp Training:
June 8th - June 12th, 2026.

Camp schedule:
June 15th - August 14th, 2026. Counselors will work forty hours a week. Camp hours 7:30 am - 5:30 pm. Participants children grades K-5.
