About the PositionThe University Police Department is dedicated to ensuring a crime‑free environment through exemplary and professional service. We seek an exceptional individual to join our team as a Campus Safety Specialist (Security Officer I).
Under general supervision, the Campus Safety Specialist performs security, public‑safety support, community engagement and related community‑service functions to support a safe, inclusive, welcoming campus environment for all Titans.
The occupational safety and public‑safety responsibilities include, but are not limited to:
- Patrol campus on foot, bicycle, and vehicle to maintain high visibility and protect the campus community from fire, theft, vandalism, and other security concerns.
- Provide safety support to social workers and/or police officers during crisis responses that do not involve weapons or violence.
- Assist in education, intervention and enforcement of campus policies and regulations.
- Monitor security cameras, download footage to support investigations and assist dispatch with non‑emergency calls.
- Assist campus community during emergencies, including evacuation assistance and immediate aid.
- Perform administrative and loss‑prevention functions at the bookstore, library and other campus locations as needed.
- High school diploma or equivalent.
- Successful completion of a background check and physical exam.
- Knowledge and/or ability to learn public‑safety equipment and systems.
- Ability to effectively use safety equipment, security systems, software and general procedures.
- Ability to detect and respond to potential hazards, emergencies, and non‑violent crime situations.
- Superior communication, de‑escalation, and incident‑reporting skills.
- Capability to interact effectively with a wide range of individuals and maintain confidentiality.
- Knowledge of first aid practices and ability to obtain CPR/first aid certification if required.
- Physical ability to walk, stand and patrol for extended periods in varied weather conditions.
- Ability to attend P.O.S.T. training related to public‑safety support and dispatch.
- Valid California driver’s license (required for the use of a state vehicle).
- Works outside in all weather conditions.
- Must be able to stand for an extended period and direct traffic or assist in critical incidents.
- Live scan required for background verification.
