Main Purpose of Job

A Correctional Maintenance Officer I (Painting) is the entry level of work involving the custody, security and supervision of adult inmates in maintenance and repair work in a correctional environment. Employees in this classification do not supervise other positions. Assign maintenance or repair tasks to designated inmates in the painting trade option; instruct inmates in the proper methods and techniques for using and caring for tools, machinery and equipment.

Responsibilities
  • Inmate Supervision:
    Maintain control and discipline among inmate workers; conduct searches for contraband items; administer verbal or written disciplinary actions to inmates for violations of conduct standards. Enforce safety, sanitary, custody and security rules and regulations. Physically restrain inmates if necessary during fights or escape attempts. Maintain continual count of inmates assigned to work details supervised. Assign installation maintenance or repair tasks to designated inmates performing at various levels of proficiency in the trade.

    Train and instruct inmates regarding methods and techniques, use of tools and equipment, and proper care of tools and equipment. Inspect and approve/disapprove all work performed by inmates for adherence to quality standards.
  • Administrative related functions:
    Estimate time, materials and supplies needed to conduct assigned maintenance or repair tasks. Order supplies and materials. Keep records of supplies and materials used; inventory materials, tools, and equipment on hand.
  • Performance of trade-related functions:
    Personally perform certain installation, maintenance or repair tasks on painted finishes and other infrastructure. Plan and implement procedures, operate hand and power tools and equipment as needed; maintain records of time, supplies and materials required. Escort third party vendors and inspect completed work assignments. Perform other related duties.
Minimum Qualifications
  • Education:

    Graduation from an accredited high school or possession of a high school equivalency certificate acceptable to the Maryland State Board of Education as described in the Maryland Correctional Training Commission regulation.
  • Experience:

    Two years of painting experience.
  • Notes:
    1) The educational requirement is set by the Maryland Correctional Training Commission in accordance with Correctional Services Article, Section 8-209, Annotated Code of Maryland.
    2) Candidates may substitute U.S. Armed Forces military service experience in correctional institutional specialty codes in the criminal justice field of work at a rate of two years of military experience for the required experience.

Preferred Qualifications

Two (2) years’ experience in the general painting and finishing of buildings and equipment to include painting, refinishing, and touch-up work on buildings and facilities, including day-to-day inspections and preventative maintenance.
