Position: Fleet Technician up to Master Fleet Technician - DOQ

Hiring Range

$18.39/hr – $28.25/hr

Pay Range (Minimum – Mid Point – Maximum)
  • Fleet Technician Apprentice: $18.39/hr – $22.08/hr – $25.75/hr
  • Fleet Technician: $20.30/hr – $24.36/hr – $28.42/hr
  • Senior Fleet Technician: $22.41/hr – $26.89/hr – $31.37/hr
  • Master Fleet Technician: $26.64/hr – $32.63/hr – $38.63/hr
Fleet Certification Pay
  • ASE Double Master Certification: $150/month (eligible up to Fleet Supervisor)
  • Tool Stipend: $1,800 annually (all Fleet technician positions)
Position Levels (Level – Description)
  • Fleet Technician Apprentice – Assists technicians, participates in on‑job training, works toward full skill.
  • Fleet Technician – Performs routine inspections, preventative maintenance, repairs, troubleshoots mechanical problems.
  • Senior Fleet Technician – Performs routine inspections, preventative maintenance, complex repairs, troubleshoots mechanical problems.
  • Master Fleet Technician – Performs routine inspections, preventative maintenance, complex repairs, troubleshoots mechanical problems.
Essential Job Functions (Summary)
  • Repair complex automotive systems on engines, electrical, mechanical and computerized vehicle systems.
  • Troubleshoot and diagnose mechanical problems on City equipment and vehicles (gasoline, alternative fuels, diesel).
  • Repair and install automotive parts.
  • Respond to emergency on‑site or roadside field service repairs.
  • Perform routine preventative maintenance, State Vehicle Inspections and repairs on fleet vehicles and heavy equipment (oil changes, tire rotation/replacement, inspect batteries, brakes, fluid levels, filters).
  • Assist in on‑job training projects/tasks to Apprentice and review completed tasks for accuracy.
  • Inspect repairs by Apprentice to ensure completeness.
  • Maintain shop area, tools, equipment orderly and safely.
  • Maintain inventory of parts, supplies, tools, equipment.
  • Disposal or recycling of used oils, hazardous materials, chemicals per regulations.
  • Diagnose and repair malfunctioning hydraulic systems.
  • Review technical, owner and repair manuals, schematics and drawings to determine manufacturer recommendations for troubleshooting and preventive maintenance procedures.
  • Maintain and complete assigned work orders and logs of time, materials, supplies, parts used.
  • Takes direction from and provides assistance to Shop Foreman when directed.
  • Provides assistance to Shop Foreman and Fleet Services Manager when necessary.
Other Important Duties
  • Attend meetings, conferences and training as required.
  • Perform other related duties as assigned.
  • Regular and consistent attendance and punctuality for assigned work hours is essential.
Required Knowledge and Skills
  • Maintenance and repair procedures.
  • Equipment repair schematics and diagrams.
  • Occupational health and safety rules and regulations.
  • Disposal and recycling techniques and procedures for hazardous materials, used oils and other chemicals.
  • Computers and related equipment, hardware and software for input maintenance and repair records and inventory costs, materials and hours.
  • City policies and procedures.
  • Effective oral and written communications.
  • Troubleshooting and diagnosing repair issues of all City vehicles and heavy equipment.
  • Cost effective maintenance and repair services.
  • On‑job technical and safety training.
  • Preparing and completing work orders and related reports.
  • Resolving customer complaints and concerns.
  • Verbal communication clarity and conciseness for on‑job safety.
Education, Experience, and Certifications Fleet Technician Apprentice
  • High School Diploma or G.E.D., and two (2) years vehicle or heavy equipment mechanical repair experience (or equivalent combination of education and experience).
  • Must possess State Vehicle Inspection Certification within 90 days of employment.
  • May be required to obtain State Vehicle Inspection Certification for DOT.
  • May be required to obtain a Class B CDL during the first nine months of employment.
  • Must pass a pre‑employment drug screen, physical agility, criminal background and MVR check.
Fleet Technician
  • High School Diploma or G.E.D., and two (2) years vehicle or heavy equipment mechanical repair experience (or equivalent combination of education and experience).
