Job Overview:
We are seeking a highly motivated and detail-oriented Assistant Controller to join our growing team in the Food Manufacturing industry. The Assistant Controller will support the Controller in managing the company s accounting operations, ensuring timely and accurate financial reporting, and maintaining robust financial controls. This is an on-site role that will involve close collaboration with cross-functional teams.
Key Responsibilities- Financial Reporting & Analysis:
- Prepare and analyze monthly, quarterly, and annual financial statements, including profit and loss statements, balance sheets, and cash flow reports.
- Provide insightful financial analysis to assist management in decision-making, including variance analysis, cost management, and trend forecasting.
- Assist in the preparation of budget forecasts and financial projections for food manufacturing operations.
- Month-End & Year-End Close: Manage month-end and year-end closing processes, ensuring all financial transactions are accurately recorded and reconciled.
- Coordinate with internal and external teams to ensure timely completion of the close process.
- Prepare and review journal entries and reconciliations for general ledger accounts.
- Cost Accounting & Inventory Management:
- Oversee and ensure accuracy in cost accounting practices, including standard cost setting, cost of goods sold (COGS) calculations, and inventory valuation.
- Manage inventory accounting and work with supply chain teams to reconcile inventory records with physical counts.
- Ensure proper allocation of manufacturing overhead costs to finished goods and work-in-progress.
- Internal Controls & Compliance: Assist in maintaining and enforcing internal controls to safeguard company assets and ensure compliance with financial policies and regulatory requirements.
- Support audit activities, both internal and external, ensuring compliance with US GAAP and other relevant accounting standards.
- Collaborate with management to address any identified control deficiencies.
- Team Leadership & Collaboration: Supervise and mentor junior accounting staff, providing training and guidance as necessary.
- Work closely with cross-functional teams (including Operations, Supply Chain, and Sales) to understand financial impacts and improve processes.
- Assist the Controller in managing financial reporting deadlines, ensuring the timely delivery of all accounting reports.
- Tax Compliance & Reporting: Support the preparation of state and federal tax filings, including sales tax, use tax, and property tax.
- Assist in the preparation and review of tax provisions and deferred income tax calculations.
- Other Duties: Ad-hoc financial reporting and special projects as needed.
- Assist with the implementation of new accounting software and system enhancements.
- Education: Bachelor s degree in Accounting, Finance, or a related field. A Master’s degree or CPA certification is a plus.
- Experience: Minimum of 5-7 years of accounting experience, with at least 3 years in a manufacturing environment (preferably in the food manufacturing industry).
- Experience with month-end close processes, financial reporting, and cost accounting.
- Familiarity with ERP systems such as SAP, JD Edwards, or Dynamics 365 is highly preferred.
- Strong knowledge of US GAAP and financial regulations.
- Strong proficiency in accounting software (Quick Books, Sage 50, Xero, etc.) and Microsoft Office Suite (Excel, Word, etc.).
- Excellent analytical and problem-solving skills.
- Ability to work independently and manage multiple priorities in a fast-paced environment.
- Strong communication skills and the ability to collaborate with cross-functional teams.
- Attention to detail and a commitment to accuracy.
- CPA or CMA certification preferred, but not required.
- Prior experience with cost accounting and inventory management in a manufacturing setting.
- Previous exposure to food manufacturing industry operations is highly desirable.
