Teaching Associate for the Department of Kinesiology College of Health and Human Services

Position Overview

The Department of Kinesiology seeks graduate students to serve as Teaching Associates. Teaching Associates provide classroom instruction and may conduct laboratory work. Eligibility is determined by TA eligibility, department eligibility and adequate funding. TAs will teach sections of Kinematics Activity Classes (KAC) and may also lead labs and other beginning courses as needed.

Anticipated Appointment Dates
  • Fall 2025:
    August 18, 2025 – December 22, 2025
  • Spring 2026:
    January 15, 2026 – May 22, 2026
Hours/Units per Week
  • Students can work up to 20 hours per week
  • 1 unit = 2.66 hours per week (40 hrs × 1 unit/15 units)
  • Typical lab range: 1.3–5.2 weighted teaching units (dependent on courses and section assignments)
  • Typical lecture range: 3–6 units (dependent on courses and section assignments)
  • No more than 7.5 units
Job Duties
  • Instruct and manage the classroom
  • Create or implement course design and assignment sequence
  • Prepare course materials and classroom activities
  • Provide classroom and/or laboratory instruction
  • Respond to and evaluate student writing
  • Assess student performance; determine course grades
  • Administer examinations
  • Attend TA orientation at the beginning of the semester
  • Participate in programmatic assessment procedures (portfolio, normings, surveys, etc.)
  • Teach beginning course (as instructor of record)
  • Maintain office hours; assist students outside of class during office hours and by appointment
  • Attend faculty‑scheduled meetings for briefing, coordination, and discussion of course content and materials
  • Perform other assignments supportive of university instruction
Qualifications
  • Admission to the Graduate Program in the Department of Kinesiology, in good academic standing.
  • Minimum GPA 3.0.
  • Enrollment in at least 6 units for the semester or in two courses toward the degree.
  • Demonstrated satisfactory progress toward the degree.
  • Ability to relate well with others within the academic environment and have the ability or potential to learn how to instruct and evaluate students.
  • Demonstrated commitment to working effectively with faculty, staff and students from diverse ethnic, cultural and socioeconomic backgrounds.
Preferred Qualifications
  • Possession of an approved baccalaureate degree in Kinesiology or a related discipline.
  • Communication skills appropriate to the instructional setting.
  • Evidence of subject matter competence.
  • Ability and willingness to work with computers, including common word‑processing software and computer and Internet‑based language teaching technology.
