While we work with students across the country, our immediate openings are:
Location: Fresno County Office of Education, Juvenile Justice Camps — Fresno, CA 93725
Schedule: Monday-Friday as needed
Hours: Substitute position with long-term placement opportunity; 8:15am-2:15pm (with a 30-minute unpaid lunch break)
Pay: $24-26 per hour, determined by experience and other factors such as degree, tutor certification, and teaching credential. All tutors without a teaching credential will need to undergo training through the National Tutoring Association, which we provide. Upon completion you will receive a pay raise.
Position SummaryThe Juvenile Detention Probation Department Tutor provides educational support and tutoring services to youth in the juvenile detention and probation system. The role focuses on assisting detained juveniles in completing their academic assignments, improving literacy and numeracy skills, preparing for GED testing, and fostering a positive learning environment that supports the youths’ educational and rehabilitative goals. This position collaborates with probation officers, counselors, and other education staff to ensure the academic progress and well-being of youth under the department’s supervision.
To be successful in this role you must be a mature individual who can proactively work with troubled youth and maintain an outgoing attitude and growth mindset.
- Academic Support & Tutoring: Provide individualized or small group tutoring for detained juveniles, helping them complete assigned coursework, prepare for standardized testing (e.g., GED), and improve academic performance in subjects such as reading, writing, mathematics, and science. Assess the educational needs of each juvenile and develop tailored lesson plans and activities to support their academic growth. Provide instruction and guidance on study strategies, time management, and effective learning techniques.
- Collaboration & Coordination: Work closely with educational staff, including teachers and counselors, to track students' academic progress and create personalized educational plans. Communicate regularly with probation officers and other juvenile detention staff to ensure that each juvenile’s educational needs are being met. Assist in preparing progress reports on juveniles’ academic performance, behavioral issues, and other factors affecting their education.
- Mentorship & Positive Reinforcement: Serve as a positive role model, encouraging students to take ownership of their learning and personal development. Provide emotional support and encouragement to help juveniles stay motivated and engaged in their academic work. Promote good behavior and academic integrity through positive reinforcement strategies.
- Recordkeeping & Reporting: Maintain accurate records of tutoring sessions, including lesson plans, attendance, and progress reports. Document any significant behavioral or academic issues and report them to appropriate staff. Ensure compliance with all educational standards, policies, and regulations.
- Program Development & Enhancement: Assist in developing and implementing educational programs and activities that address the specific needs of detained youth, including special education services where applicable.
