The successful candidate will join a college dedicated to the students it serves.
The Next Up Program purpose is to strengthen the capacity of Madera Community College to support the higher education success, health and well-being of current and former foster youth in the local service area. The goals of the Next Up Program is to encourage enrollment, retention, degree completion and transfer of current and former foster youth. The Counselor, Next Up will:
- Provide the total range of community college academic, transfer and career counseling to focus on current and former foster youth, including orientation and the development of student educational plans (SEP);
- Provide personal counseling to assist students in addressing a variety of personal challenges, including personal relationship issues and problems, development of interpersonal communication skills, psychological and/or behavioral difficulties, decision making skills, chemical dependency problems, gender/sexuality issues and concerns, health problems and concerns;
- Provide referrals to external community agencies for housing assistance, and health, mental health and/or professional counseling;
- Interpret English/math assessments;
- Administer and interpret behavioral skills assessments;
- Instruct counseling classes for college success, career planning, study skills and transfer preparation;
- Provide Independent Living instruction and facilitate small groups for students on topics of interest as appropriate;
