Essential Functions of Position

Responsibilities
  • Teach a full range of Communication courses (public speaking, interpersonal communication, argumentation, persuasion, group communication, and other courses offered);
  • Communicate effectively with students and staff;
  • Use technology solutions in the classroom;
  • Participate in professional meetings and workshops;
  • Engage in extracurricular department activities;
  • Teach forensics courses and coach a comprehensive intercollegiate forensic program;
  • Prepare competitors for contests and travel to tournaments for chaperoning, coaching, and judging;
  • Serve on and attend department, college, and district committees as needed;
  • Participate in program review, student learning outcome development, and assessment to improve student learning;
  • Provide instruction in various settings (evening, weekend, online, off‑campus) including dual enrollment at local high schools; and
  • Perform other duties as assigned.
Minimum Qualifications
  • Evidence of responsiveness to diverse student backgrounds and equity‑minded classroom practice;
  • Master’s degree in speech, speech broadcasting, telecommunications, rhetoric, communication, communication studies, speech communication, or organizational communication; or
  • Bachelor’s degree in the above fields and a Master’s in drama/theater arts, mass communication, or English;
  • A valid California Community College Credential; or
  • Equivalent education and/or experience (requires equivalency).
Desirable Qualifications
  • Experience incorporating DEI into all responsibilities;
  • Recent work with African American, Asian/Pacific Islander, Latinx, Native American, and other racially minoritized students and an understanding of exclusionary patterns in higher education;
  • Willingness to examine and improve instructional practices to support racially minoritized students;
  • Experience working with diverse students, including those with disabilities;
  • Technical proficiency with computers and educational technology;
  • Effective communication with students and staff;
  • Experience teaching community‑college communication courses;
  • Knowledge of current assessment methods and materials;
  • Committee participation;
  • Professional organization membership;
  • Coaching experience in forensic programs and debate competitions;
  • Collegiality and a positive workplace climate; and
  • Knowledge of the community‑college mission and goals.
Conditions of Employment

Duty days: 178 per year (prorated based on start date).

Salary and Benefits

Starting annual salary $71,054 – $106,970 (based on education and experience). An annual doctoral stipend of $2,419 is available. Fringe benefits include medical, dental, vision, and life insurance. Employees are members of CalSTRS.

Selection Procedure

Applications screened by Human Resources for completeness and minimum qualifications. Qualifying applicants will be reviewed by a selection advisory committee, invited to interview, and further evaluated by the Vice President and College President. approval obtained from the Board of Trustees.
