What To Expect

Tesla’s Materials Engineering team is at the forefront of developing first‑of‑a‑kind processes that allow us to produce amazing vehicles at best‑in‑class quality and rate in a safe and ergonomic environment. The Material Eng Org is seeking a Sr. Manufacturing Engineer to lead the design and development of manufacturing for our products, which includes specification and validation, establishing and optimizing critical process parameters, design for manufacturing, equipment specification and design, as well as installation and commissioning.

The candidate will work closely with internal cross‑functional teams, external vendors and technology partners on manufacturing development from concept to production.

What You’ll Do
  • Lead manufacturing line design and launch—bid package development, vendor selection, equipment concept design, lead vendor design reviews, oversee fabrication, acceptance testing standards and visits, coordinate required building utilities, equipment installation, commissioning, and handover to operations, including a high level of cross‑collaboration with teams such as internal stakeholders, Facilities, Construction, Operations, Maintenance and other Tesla manufacturing groups.
  • Lead product design for manufacturability (DFM) and sustainability, including analysis of product design and identification of potential risks, and steering product design to the lowest overall cost (BOM & manufacturing cost).
  • Design custom fixtures, jigs, tools, structures, etc. as needed, providing detailed build‑to‑print models/drawings for fabrication.
  • Detailed line design based on process requirements, throughput, OEE calculations including layout of equipment for manufacturing shops.
  • Lead process qualification, including development of acceptance testing criteria and verifying equipment meets requirements using statistical tools (such as GR&R, SPC and Cp/Cpk).
  • Documentation of product requirements for process and equipment specification to sustain.
  • Development of advanced processing technologies and equipment from concept to serial production.
  • Management of medium to large‑scale projects for new programs, including the development of timing plans, cost breakdowns, identification of risks to project timing, driving corrective action, reporting of project status and oversight of installation and commissioning.
What You’ll Bring
  • Degree in Engineering (Manufacturing, Mechanical, Mechatronics or Chemical preferred) or equivalent experience.
  • Three or more years of designing high‑volume manufacturing lines, mechanical equipment, fixturing and tooling in 2D and 3D CAD.
  • Experience with developing, installing, and commissioning & ramp‑up high‑volume manufacturing process equipment & automation systems.
  • Experience in developing, executing, and interpreting results of Design of Experiments (DOE).
  • Experience using industrial engineering methods in high‑volume manufacturing processes.
  • Proficient in using Catia, Solid Works, Inventor, AutoCAD, Revit & automation software.
  • Proficient in the development and deployment of PFMEAs, new product introduction, and manufacturing operations.

Expected Compensation

$109,600 – $234,000 annual salary + cash and stock awards + benefits.

Pay offered may vary depending on multiple individualized factors, including market location, job‑related knowledge, skills and experience. The total compensation package for this position may also include other elements dependent on the position offered. Details of participation in these benefit plans will be provided if an employee receives an offer of employment.
