What to Expect
The Powertrain Architecture and Modeling Team develops physics-based models of Tesla's electric drive systems to support architecture design, performance optimization, and engineering decision-making.
As an Electrical Engineer on the team, you will develop, validate, and apply models of electric motors, drive inverters, and high‑voltage powertrain components, including high‑frequency electrical phenomena, efficiency and loss mechanisms, controls interaction, and electro‑thermal behavior across the drivetrain (HV chain, electric machine, inverter, gearbox).
You will use these models to guide motor drive and power electronics design teams through trade‑off studies, multi‑objective optimization, and performance target definition throughout the engineering lifecycle of multiple vehicle programs.
This role is highly cross‑functional with electric drive unit design, power electronics hardware, motor controls, thermal engineering, and HV distribution teams.
What You’ll Do- Advance the capabilities and intellectual property of Tesla's in‑house electric drive and powertrain performance models
- Develop and validate models of electric machines, inverters, and HV drivetrain components across operating conditions
- Capture high frequency switching behavior, electromagnetic losses, efficiency maps, and electro‑thermal coupling effects
- Use models to evaluate design trade‑offs and guide motor drive, inverter, and controls development
- Produce repeatable, data‑driven performance predictions for engineering stakeholders
- Communicate modeling results to influence architecture, efficiency, and performance targets
- Develop frameworks for tracking model maturity as components progress from concept to production
- Degree in Electrical Engineering, Power Electronics, Electric Machines, or equivalent experience
- Experience or strong academic background in electric motors, motor drives, power electronics, or high‑voltage systems
- Understanding of inverter operation, switching behavior, motor control strategies, and drivetrain efficiency
- Knowledge of loss mechanisms in electric machines and power electronics (electrical, magnetic, switching, thermal)
- Experience modeling electro‑mechanical and electro‑thermal systems
- MATLAB/Simulink experience for system modeling and data analysis
- Strong foundation in physics‑based modeling, numerical methods, optimization, and differential equations
- Ability to work cross‑functionally with hardware, controls, and thermal teams
- Strong communication skills and collaborative mindset
- Medical, dental, vision, and health savings account (HSA) benefits at no employee contribution
- Flexible spending account (FSA)
- 401(k) with employer match, employee stock purchase plan, and other financial benefits
- Life insurance and long‑term disability coverage
- Paid holidays, vacation time, and flexible work options
- Employee discount program
