What To ExpectThe Sr. Regulatory Compliance Engineer will be responsible for energy product industry development activities regarding the governing codes, standards, and regulations. The role primarily provides coverage of fire safety codes and product standards, including building safety codes, impacting the execution of energy products and informing development teams on regulatory considerations for new product design. This function includes leading and supporting cross‑functional initiatives from Compliance, Engineering, Policy, and Operations to ensure streamlined approvals across North America and to a lesser extent internationally.
It is the Sr. Regulatory Compliance Engineer’s primary responsibility to support the team’s core codes and standards development activities through research, white papers, and active participation in fire/building safety related stakeholder committees such as NFPA 855, NFPA 800, NFPA 1, NFPA 30A, NFPA 88A, NFPA 20, NFPA 25, ICC (IFC, IBC, IEBC, IRC), IEC, and NEMA. Other initiatives focus on approval support related to jurisdictional requirements and how our products adhere to the appropriate fire and building safety standards.
You’ll Do
- Lead fire and building safety standards development activities applicable to our commercial and industrial products.
- Ensure proposed changes to the standard remove any barriers to product innovation while maintaining a high bar for safety.
- Manage internal communications regarding changes in related codes and standard bodies, their impact, and determinations for how to improve and/or mitigate any potential risks caused by product regulations.
- Join external groups and committees to support codes and standards development activities.
- Support product and project engineering with building and fire safety standards expertise and design‑for‑compliance activities.
- Develop NDA and public‑facing technical white papers supporting product compliance, deployment, fire safety, and applicability to international standards including project‑specific FPE reports, Hazard Mitigation Analysis documentation, emergency response guides and additional technical appendices.
- Provide technical expertise in support of Policy team regulatory initiatives.
- Participate in technical documentation change control and maintenance activities for compliance‑related documents.
- Support internal and external teams with jurisdictional approval escalations hindering product installation.
- Participate in outreach and education efforts such as fire safety conferences, Tesla‑hosted training events, customer training events and code development forums.
- Fire Protection Engineering Degree or similar degree involving fire & renewable and/or energy storage focus, or equivalent experience. FPE license preferred.
- 5–7 years of work experience in project engineering, code and standards development activities, and/or jurisdictional approval processes.
- Understanding of fire safety regulations such as NFPA 855, NFPA 800, NFPA 1, NFPA 30A, NFPA 88A, NFPA 20, NFPA 25, ICC (IFC, IBC, IEBC, IRC), IEC and their development processes.
- Technical understanding of Energy Storage Systems and Lithium‑ion battery technologies.
- Advanced and concise technical writing skills.
- Strong personable skills to interact with standards development groups and other industry members.

- Able to organize time and tasks in a fast‑paced environment.
