Controller
-Targetts Castle Building Supplies

Hours:

Monday–Friday, 8:00am–5:00pm

Reports to:

COO (Senior Leadership)

About the Role

Targetts is a growing, practical business that values clarity, accountability, and sound decision making. We are hiring a Controller to take ownership of our financial reporting, controls, and financial structure as we continue to scale.

This is a hands‑on Controller role, not a CFO role and not an entry level accounting position. The right candidate is someone who has owned month‑end close, understands how financial information supports real operational decisions, and is comfortable operating in a growing environment where systems are improving and a desire for implementation is necessary.

Role Purpose

The Controller is responsible for the integrity, accuracy, and clarity of Targetts’ financial information. This role ensures reliable reporting, strong internal controls, and meaningful financial insight to support leadership decisions and long‑term growth.

Key Responsibilities Financial Reporting & Month‑End Close
  • Own and manage the full month‑end close process, including:
    • Journal entries and accruals
    • Bank and balance sheet reconciliations
    • Variance analysis and financial commentary
  • Prepare and deliver monthly financial statements that are accurate, timely, and decision‑ready
  • Ensure financial data is clean, reliable, and clearly explained to leadership
Budgeting, Forecasting & Insights
  • Lead the annual budgeting process
  • Build and maintain financial forecasts aligned with business drivers
  • Provide clear analysis and insights to support operational and strategic decisions
Internal Controls, Compliance & Risk
  • Design, implement, and maintain strong internal financial controls
  • Ensure compliance with accounting standards and statutory obligations (HST, payroll, WCB, etc.)
  • Oversee year‑end working papers and coordinate with external accountants/auditors
Business Partnership & Operations Support
  • Act as a financial thought partner to senior leadership
  • Translate financial information into practical insights that support the business
  • Monitor key metrics such as cash flow, DSO, and DPO to ensure financial discipline
Benefits & Administration Oversight
  • Administer and manage employee benefits programs (medical, dental, RRSP/pension)
  • Work with benefits providers and leadership to ensure accurate setup, administration, and policies
Leadership & Team Support
  • Provide guidance and oversight to the Senior Bookkeeper
  • Clarify expectations, improve processes, and support a strong finance function as the business grows
What We’re Looking For Education & Experience
  • Accounting degree (BBA, BComm, or equivalent)
  • CPA designation (or actively working toward it) strongly preferred
  • Minimum 5 years of progressive accounting experience, including:
    • 2+ years in a senior accounting or Assistant Controller role
    • Direct responsibility for month‑end close and financial reporting
Technical & Practical Experience
  • Strong experience with:
    • Balance sheet reconciliations
    • Financial statement preparation
    • Audit support and year‑end working papers
  • Experience in small‑to‑mid‑sized businesses preferred
  • Experience with mid‑market accounting systems (QBO, Sage, Xero, Microsoft Dynamics)
  • Bonus (not required): WIP, inventory, contractor or project‑based accounting
Leadership & Professional Attributes
  • Demonstrates ownership, accountability, and sound judgment
  • Comfortable partnering with leadership, not just executing tasks
  • Able to explain financial information clearly and practically
  • Structured, proactive, and improvement‑oriented
  • High integrity and strong attention to detail
This Role Is a Good Fit If You:
  • Have owned month‑end close and financial reporting end‑to‑end
  • Enjoy improving processes and building structure in a growing business
  • Are comfortable working closely with senior leadership
  • Value accuracy, clarity, and accountability
This Role Is Likely Not a Fit If You:
  • Have primarily AP/AR experience without full‑cycle responsibility
  • Are looking for a CFO‑level strategic role without hands‑on execution
