The Technical Services Department is responsible for acquisitions and cataloguing of all library material for the Fredericton campus as well as some cataloguing for the Saint John campus, procedural oversight for both campuses, and for ensuring that research and instructional resources are discoverable through the online catalogue and accessible through our Knowledge Base and on other platforms. The department is accountable through the Director of Collections Strategy and Scholarly Communication.

Standard Work Hours

Mon - Fri | 8:15 am - 4:30 pm | 36.25 hours per week

Role

Reporting to the Head of Technical Services, the Library Assistant PL5 is responsible for initiating, documenting and completing all permissions for the reuse of copyrighted materials, providing support to the Copyright Officer, and will help to manage course reserves through the library. This position will also serve as backup for ordering/receiving and inter‑library loans and document delivery during busy periods.

Responsibilities
  • Correspond with the Copyright Clearance Center and with various publishers to secure permission to use copyrighted works as class readings using the course reserves module.
  • Track and document all correspondence, permissions granted and their associated terms and conditions, and invoicing and payment, to demonstrate that copyrighted works are posted for class use in compliance with Canadian Copyright law.
  • Advise Reserves staff of the readiness of copyrighted works to be shared in the reserves module and liaise with the licensing librarian to review licenses for the reuse of copyrighted works.
  • Assist the librarian assigned with responsibility for copyright support to the UNB community, through updating informational web sites, and fielding and directing queries.
  • Process materials to be placed on Reserve at any branch of UNB Libraries.
  • Determine whether fair dealing applies to the use of a copyrighted work, in collaboration with the copyright librarian.
  • Seek alternative versions of copyrighted works in the library's appropriately licensed resources and refer works needing copyright clearance as needed.
  • Provide ordering and receiving support by creating and verifying purchase orders with selectors, placing orders for print and digital materials, receiving and inspecting shipped items, and preparing materials for processing according to library standards.
  • Support digital and document delivery services by using an online inter‑library loan and document delivery platform, collecting, scanning, packaging, and mailing materials, as well as receiving and processing returned items for both lending and borrowing activities.
  • Other duties as assigned.
What You Bring
  • University degree or library technician diploma from a college.
  • 2 years' relevant experience working with copyrighted published materials.
  • 2 years' relevant experience with orders, invoices, or tracking financial information.
Additional Strengths
  • Strong search skills, coupled with knowledge of library catalogues, databases, and licensed electronic resources.
  • Proficiency with word processing, spreadsheet programs, file sharing applications, Office 365, different browsers, etc.
  • Able to work effectively in an online environment.
  • Ability and aptitude for learning new skills and technology.
  • Web editing experience an asset.
  • Experience with library management system software and copy cataloguing an asset but not required.
  • Must have excellent written and spoken communication skills, be self‑motivated and be able to work independently and as a team player.
  • Must be able to perform work requiring attention to detail and accuracy, along with excellent keyboarding skills.
