The Technical Services Department is responsible for acquisitions and cataloguing of all library material for the Fredericton campus as well as some cataloguing for the Saint John campus, procedural oversight for both campuses, and for ensuring that research and instructional resources are discoverable through the online catalogue and accessible through our Knowledge Base and on other platforms. The department is accountable through the Director of Collections Strategy and Scholarly Communication.

YOUR FOCUSReporting to the Manager of Technical Services, the Library Assistant PL5 is responsible for receiving, verifying, correcting, organizing and completing monographic purchase requests; searching for bibliographic records for the material requested; assigning and contacting vendors for the purchase of materials; inputting, tracking and reporting all order information; receiving library materials both physically and in the library's online system. Under the supervision of the Head of Technical Services, this position is responsible for cataloguing material across all disciplines in a variety of formats.
- Receive purchase requests for orders daily from library selectors and communicate with selectors to verify and confirm order information.
- Create orders for formats including print, ebooks, DVDs, and eVideos via the library's online system, and place orders with various vendors via websites, email, or phone.
- Maintain order tracking documentation and reports.
- Make ordering decisions based on vendor options, shipping methods, exchange rate, price and priority.
- Check funds daily to confirm a positive free balance before ordering material.
- Check for back orders, cancellations and shipping information and claim material from other vendors/publisher monthly by direct phone or email.
- Adding ebook access to the library catalogue.
- Perform online searching for cataloguing records across all disciplines in a variety of formats (i.e. books, serials, electronic resources, audiovisual materials, and other forms that may arise).
- Access bibliographic utilities and databases as needed, e.g. OCLC World Cat database, Cataloger's Desktop, Library of Congress Classification Web.
- Input call numbers (as given) and input item specific or location specific information as needed.
- Opening vendor shipments of all library materials, checking for accuracy or damage, and receiving titles into the library's online system.
- Affixing barcodes to material according to the library's physical processing standards.
- Other duties as required.
- University degree or library technician diploma from a college.
- 2 years of relevant experience with orders, invoices and tracking financial information.
- Strong search skills, coupled with knowledge of library catalogues, databases, and licensed electronic resources.
- Proficiency with word processing, spreadsheet programs, file sharing applications, Office 365, different browsers, etc.
- Able to work effectively in an online environment.
- Ability and aptitude for learning new skills and technology.
- Experience with library management system software and copy cataloguing an asset.
- Must have excellent written and spoken communication skills, be self‑motivated and be able to work independently and as a team player.
- Must be able to perform work requiring attention to detail and accuracy, along with excellent keyboarding skills.
