The Community Medicine Veterinarian provides compassionate, high-quality veterinary care to public clients through Fredericksburg SPCA’s community clinic. This role focuses primarily on preventive care, basic medical treatment, client education, and spay/neuter services for owned animals in the Greater Fredericksburg community.
While this position may support shelter operations as needed, its primary responsibility is the delivery of accessible, mission-aligned veterinary services to the public in a manner that reflects FredSPCA’s commitment to professionalism, empathy, and community impact.
DUTIES & RESPONSIBILITIES Clinical Care – Public Clients- Provide high-quality preventive and basic medical care to public patients, including:
- Physical examinations
- Diagnostics and treatment recommendations
- Prescriptions and discharge instructions
- Perform spay/neuter and other routine surgical procedures for public animals.
- Oversee medical care during assigned clinic days.
- Ensure appropriate medications are administered by veterinary staff as directed.
- Communicate effectively and compassionately with clients from diverse backgrounds.
- Provide clear guidance regarding treatment options, preventive care, and follow-up.
- Exercise patience and professionalism when working with emotional or difficult situations.
- Promote positive public relations and trust in FredSPCA’s community clinic.
- Maintain all required licensure, DEA registration, and continuing education.
- Adhere to organizational protocols, safety standards, and applicable regulations.
- Take immediate action to address safety concerns or noncompliance.
- Contribute to a positive, collaborative clinic environment.
- Perform other related duties as assigned in support of clinic operations.
- DVM or VMD from an AVMA-accredited veterinary school.
- Licensed (or eligible for licensure) in the Commonwealth of Virginia.
- DEA license (or ability to obtain).
- Minimum 3–5 years of clinical experience, with strong preference for shelter medicine and/or high-volume practice.
