Responsibilities

Essential duties and responsibilities:

The Highway Permit Inspector will review, inspect and process new street additions and county bond projects and additions; ensure permit work zones are designed and implemented properly and traffic control is maintained according to guidelines; and respond to citizens, elected officials and local government officials regarding permit inquiries/concerns. The position will conduct on-site inspections for subdivision and permit projects; review site plans, special permits, rezoning requests and land divisions;

complete required paperwork to process permits and subdivision acceptance; and meet with applicants in the field, review project work zones and review/determine bond estimates.

  • Knowledge of highway construction and roadway maintenance.
  • Ability to read and interpret site plans, road construction plans, property plats, utility plans and sketches.
  • Ability to interpret VDOT Road and Bridge standards and specs, VA Work Area Protection manual, Access Management and Land Use Permit Regulations.
  • Considerable knowledge of land use permitting process and procedures.
Other
  • Availability for day and/or night work to support the contractor's schedule.

Qualifications
  • Minimum of 4 years of relevant work experience
  • High school/GED
  • Ability to understand construction plans, specifications, and procedures.
  • Demonstrate basic math skills, including geometry and trigonometry.
  • Possess the ability to read, write, and communicate fluently.
  • Work effectively as a team member and complete daily reports by hand and computer.
Certificates, Licenses, And/or Registrations Required
  • Valid Driver’s License
  • Ability to pass and maintain required certifications.
  • Pre-employment drug screening is a condition of employment. Background and motor vehicle checks may be required based upon position.
