Position: Classroom Assistant - Lower School (2026-2027 School Year)

Description

The Classroom Assistant supports and advances the mission of FCS by helping in various ways as directed by the Classroom Teacher, with the students in the content areas, and with general classroom procedures, as time allows and as directed by the teacher; reports to the Principal. The primary task of an assistant is to work with the students academically in a group or on an individual basis, and to handle routine class procedures as time allows.

Instructional

Responsibilities
  • Become very familiar with the classroom academic curriculum
  • Work with students on an individual or small group basis in any academic area the teacher deems necessary
  • Assist the teacher during whole group instruction and seatwork time by moving from child to child to help each one stay on task
  • Tutor one or more students in a specific subject skill to help them gain understanding and mastery
  • On occasion, teach a lesson to the entire class
  • Help monitor classroom behavior
  • Routine Classroom Procedures Pre‑Kindergarten, Kindergarten and First Grade daily or weekly duties may include the following:
    • Assist on the playground before school, during dismissal and at recess time
    • Assist at restroom time
    • Help keep the room tidy and the materials organized
    • Maintain grade level storage cabinets
    • Collect and record notes and money each morning
    • Record daily attendance
    • Help at snack time with milk, opening drinks, and assisting with cleaning tables or desks after snack
    • Sort papers that have been graded and organize them to go home weekly
    • Assist with distributing work papers to students
    • Assist with erasing and cleaning boards
    • Help put materials away and prepare new materials for the next day
    • Print names on all students’ papers as appropriate
    • Pull papers out of workbooks in advance of use
    • Make worksheets and/or copy them for seat work
    • File all new worksheets
    • Assist in putting up bulletin boards
    • Prepare materials for projects
    • Assist with “Band‑Aid” nursing duties
    • Assist with making chapel awards
    • Assist with other classroom procedures as needed
    Second through Fifth Grade Assistant duties will be determined each week by the teacher and may include the following:
    • Make chapel awards
    • Sort and staple work papers and prepare weekly paper packets to send home
    • Prepare materials for projects
    • Assist in putting up bulletin boards
    • Run copies of materials as needed
    • File papers
    • Grade papers that are objective (grading papers that are subjective is the teacher’s responsibility)
    • Assist in the classroom with students when asked by the teacher, especially during math and/or reading groups
    • Assist with other tasks as needed
    • Assist with before school, recess and dismissal duties
    Requirements The Classroom Assistant should have the following qualifications:
  • Committed Christian with a close personal walk with the Lord, maintained through personal routines (such as prayer and reading the Bible) and in the school setting (through regular participation in Prayer and Share devotional times and other spiritual development)
  • Possesses Christian character qualities to serve as a role model for young people and readiness to share faith in Christ with students as part of our school’s mission
  • Regular in attendance at an evangelical Protestant church
  • Commitment to a biblical lifestyle, not promoting or engaging in premarital, extramarital, transgender, or homosexual behavior
  • If married, a solid commitment based on Mark 10:9 and a positive marital relationship
  • Strong commitment to Christian education
  • Supports an orderly learning atmosphere
  • Enthusiastic, sensitive, loving rapport with students, openness with parents and staff
  • Well organized, diligent, creative
  • Ability to carry out physical requirements related to the job and building environment, such as (but not limited to) climbing stairs, riding the bus on field trips and, supervising students both out‑of‑doors and indoors
