position overview
transportation department – 12‑month position (244 days/year), 8 hours per day. Salary starts at $26.80 per hour, grade s10. Daily work hours tbd.
key responsibilities- instruct new and veteran bus drivers in all aspects of school vehicle operation, including standard driving skills, safety procedures, and emergency equipment usage.
- ride with drivers on regular runs to observe driving techniques, provide feedback, and evaluate on‑road performance.
- maintain training records and evaluate drivers at the end of the training period.
- report equipment, scheduling, and operational issues to management.
- plan, organize, and record work in an orderly manner.
- perform other duties as assigned by the assistant transportation manager.
- high school diploma or ged equivalent.
- minimum of five years’ experience driving various types of school buses.
- completion of the maryland department of education driver instructor workshop within 90 days of employment.
- knowledge of school bus operation, mechanics, laws, rules, and regulations.
- successful completion of any required driver tests.
- pass the maryland school bus driver’s physical examination.
- compliance with all federal, state, and local school bus driver requirements.
- possession of a maryland cdl for school vehicles.
- valid motor vehicle administration record.
- strong oral and written communication skills.
- ability to work effectively under stress.
- capable of performing essential functions with or without reasonable accommodations.
- regular and predictable attendance.
- knowledge of microsoft office suite.
- experience providing staff development in small and large group settings.
- experience evaluating personnel based on performance objectives.
- familiarity with fcps policies, goals, and programs.
