The Recreation Department seeks to enhance the quality of life of county residents by providing innovative activities and programs that meet the recreational needs of Frederick County communities. POSITION DETAILS:Non‑exempt; part‑time position; working up to 2‑10 hours per week as needed during 6 to 8 week program sessions; assigned hours may include weekdays, weekends/evening hours, and events; no benefits.
Parks and Recreation Adaptive Recreation staff may include but are not limited to various adaptive Recreation Directors, Assistant Directors, Program Leaders, Trip Leaders, Specialized Instructors, Support Staff, etc. Areas of focus include adaptive and inclusive sports, social outings, aerobic/fitness, enrichment programs, etc. Class sessions are located at various Frederick County parks and Recreation Centers. Location, schedule, and duration of each class/program will be determined as appropriate.
Necessary equipment will be provided by the Division of Parks and Recreation. Supervision is received from a Recreation Specialist or Recreation Supervisor.

RESPONSIBILITIES- Develop, coordinate, and execute lesson plans and course outlines for various adaptive and inclusive programs geared towards children, teens, and adults with various disabilities and health conditions
- Teach and demonstrate program‑related skills and techniques
- Creatively adapt and individualize activities to the specific needs of participants
- Maintain behavior protocols when necessary
- Open and close the program area (including set‑up and clean‑up)
- Assure the return and condition of issued equipment and supplies
- Compile and maintain record‑keeping related to each class or participant (i.e. attendance or participant progress reports)
- Communicate effectively with age‑appropriate language
- Effectively communicate participant progress to supervisors and parents
- Perform other related duties as required

QUALIFICATIONS- years of age at time of application
- Minimum 1 year experience working with individuals with disabilities or pursuing a degree in Education, Social Work, Therapeutic Recreation or a related field
- Current certification in First Aid and CPR (infant/child and adult), or able to become so certified prior to the start of a program (current certifications must be maintained throughout employment)

Related education may be considered towards the overall requirement of this position
SKILLS AND ABILITIES
- Knowledge of adaptive and inclusive recreational programs, activities, and practices
- Knowledge and understanding of behavior management strategies and ability to enforce behavior management strategies when necessary
- Ability to communicate effectively with individuals with various types of disabilities
- Ability to work well with large and small groups
- Ability to effectively lead and supervise large groups in recreational activities
- Positive attitude of enthusiasm and commitment providing recreation opportunities for individuals with disabilities
