Overview
The Alaka`ina Foundation Family of Companies (FOCs) is looking for a Structural Engineering Technician to provide technical support to our government customer located in Ft. Detrick, Maryland.
Structural Engineering Technician shall maintain a comprehensive knowledge of mechanical equipment, engineering principles, Heating, Ventilation, and Air Conditioning (HVAC), plumbing and heating systems. Performs a variety of duties to include facilities maintenance and repairs, door, locks and hardware installation, painting, expansion joints, wall, ceiling and flooring repairs, carpet and furniture installation and minor electrical and sheet metal repairs.
Responsibilities- Performs minor repairs to concrete block walls, gypsum board and fire-retardant panels. Applies coating materials by brushing, rolling and spraying, using materials prepared according to directions and applying techniques to ensure surfaces are fully coated, protected, and free from drips and runs.
- Applies epoxy floor coatings for minor repairs; pours wet concrete into forms; spreads and levels; smooths and finishes using trowel and float.
- Plans and lays out work using blueprints or lay-out sketches; determines tools required and estimates materials.
- Performs work in bio-containment suites (BSL-3 and BSL-4) in the presence of highly hazardous infectious agents and toxins; participates in Bio-surety Personnel Reliability System. Participates in Biological Personnel Reliability Program (BPRP) as required by USAMRIID and applicable regulations. Follows safety standards per DA-PAM 385-69 and related policies. Enrolls in Formaldehyde Program for personnel working with formaldehyde or related substances per 29 CFR OSHA .
May perform decontamination and other related tasks in BSL3/BSL4 environments. - Works independently in the absence of supervision. Demonstrates broad knowledge of the maintenance trades; reads and works from blueprints, specifications, sketches, orders, and uses arithmetic; applies practical experience to plan and complete work.
- Operates and maintains wood-working and sheet metal machinery; uses hand tools and power tools as described; performs cement work techniques.
- Maintains knowledge of work methods, sequencing and techniques of cement work; ensures work assignments meet deadlines and are completed on time.
- Maintains and repairs doors, door jambs, electrical components, light bulbs, cabinets; fabricates wall plates, grates, strainers, sheet metal boxes and lids; installs signage and wall brackets.
- Works with requester to plan and carry out assignments, determines materials/tools needed, and ensures specifications are met using blueprints and sketches. Coordinates with TPOC/Facility Management Office/COR as needed.
- Performs after-hours, emergency call-back, and variable work schedules as required; response time within one hour.
- Performs other duties as assigned and communicates status to TPOC. Complies with safety standards and OSHA regulations. Handles ~37 unscheduled and scheduled work requests per month, including assessment, coordination, troubleshooting, parts, and DMLSS paperwork.
- Performs on-site inspections, interprets blueprints, conducts visual and measurement testing, reviews maintenance manuals, develops operating procedures, and documents discrepancies for reporting to TPOC, Facility Management Office, and COR.
- Other duties as assigned by supervisor.
High School Diploma or equivalency
Required Skills and Experience- Five plus (5+) years of experience
- Comprehensive knowledge of mechanical equipment, HVAC, plumbing and heating systems
- Operate and maintain wood-working and sheet metal machinery
- Knowledge of standard surface preparation and coating methods and techniques; ability to use tools such as scrapers, wire brushes, putty knives, sandpaper, paint brushes, rollers, spray guns
- Ability to use hand tools and power equipment such as hammers, saws, chisels, braces and bits, planers
- Comprehensive knowledge of cement work methods
- Must be a US Citizen.
- Must be able to obtain/maintain BPRP status and BSL-3/4 access per AR 190-17 and local policies.
