12-month position (260 days/year), 8 hours per day.

salary

support salary scale grade s11: $27.84 per hour; starting. Under the fair labor and standards act this position is non‑exempt from overtime. Actual salary placement will be in accordance with the salary procedures of the frederick county public school system.

role

the building automation systems technician i supports the programming, operation, and maintenance of hardware and software that monitor and control critical building systems within approximately 70 facilities, covering roughly 7 million square feet of space. The position ensures the operational performance of heating, ventilation, air conditioning (hvac), and lighting systems to optimize energy usage, occupant comfort, and safety.

essential functions
  • assist area maintenance personnel with bas issues: diagnose, troubleshoot, and resolve building automation system malfunctions using system diagnostics tools and real‑time data analysis.
  • design, build, and modify bas graphics: develop and update graphical user interfaces for bas systems using specialized graphics software.
  • configure and program hvac and bas control systems: program and configure bas, including direct digital control (ddc) systems for hvac equipment, and adjust control parameters.
  • installation and integration of new bas hardware: install new bas hardware components and verify system interoperability.
  • maintain and calibrate existing bas systems: conduct regular maintenance and calibration of existing bas systems.
  • collaborate on new construction and bas projects: participate in planning, development, and review of building automation systems for new construction projects.
  • integrate third‑party hardware into existing bas platforms: evaluate compatibility and ensure communication of third‑party devices.
education/training/experience – required qualifications
  • high school diploma or ged.
  • 1–3 years of bas related experience.
  • experience with hvac systems and controls, including operating and repairing building automation systems.
  • knowledge of bas components and hvac control devices, including troubleshooting and making standard repairs.
  • experience with operating and repairing hvac systems and controls and computer programming as it relates to energy management systems.
certification/license
  • valid driver's license and ability to operate a vehicle in accordance with board of education policies.
education/training/experience – preferred qualifications
  • coursework or training in commercial hvac systems and building controls.
  • 1–3 years of experience working on commercial hvac and bas systems.
  • experience with building automation systems such as johnson controls metasys, tridium, and low‑voltage electrical installations.
  • familiarity with computer network wiring in commercial settings.
  • experience working with computers, including programming and graphic development.
  • experience with low‑voltage electrical installation, maintenance and repairs.
  • experience with computer network cabling and wiring in commercial settings.
  • experience in the use of electronics, combustion, and hvac systems testing equipment.
knowledge, skills, and abilities
  • knowledge of bas components and hvac control devices sufficient for troubleshooting and standard repairs.
  • knowledge of commercial hvac systems.
  • ability to program, troubleshoot, and maintain bas computers.
  • strong organizational and communication skills.
  • ability to troubleshoot electrical systems, read schematics, and understand wiring systems.
  • basic knowledge of rs‑485 protocols (bacnet ms/tp, bacnet ip).
  • demonstrated ability to work with hand and power tools safely.
  • basic computer programming and graphic development skills.
