Job Summary
The City of Frederick, Maryland is hiring Planner I, Planner II, and Planner III positions. All Planner levels perform the technical review and analysis of development applications—subdivisions, site plans, forest conservation plans, rezonings, annexations, amendments to the Land Management Code, master plans, and public requests for variances—and provide policy and technical recommendations to the Planning Commission, Zoning Board of Appeals, City Council, and the public.
Planner IPay: $36.32 / hour
- Conduct technical review of development applications in accordance with regulations.
- Serve as Project Manager for applications, coordinating reviews with internal/external agencies, managing public notice requirements, and tracking application schedules.
- Prepare and present reports and recommendations to the Planning Commission, Zoning Board of Appeals, and City Council.
- Review building permits and improvement plans for compliance.
- Advise architects, builders, attorneys, contractors, and engineers on development procedures.
- Assist the public in understanding development procedures and regulations.
- Attend scheduled and special meetings, including evenings.
- Perform other duties as assigned.
Pay: $39.04 / hour
- Conduct technical review of rezoning, master plans, and other development applications and public requests for variances.
- Serve as Project Manager, coordinating reviews, managing public notice, and tracking application schedules.
- Prepare and present reports and recommendations to the Planning Commission, Zoning Board of Appeals, and City Council.
- Review building permits and improvement plans for compliance.
- Advise development professionals and the public on procedures and regulations.
- Assist Planner I staff in meeting objectives.
- Attend scheduled and special meetings, including evenings.
- Perform other duties as assigned.
Pay: $41.96 / hour
- Conduct technical review of annexations, rezonings, master plans, and public requests for variances.
- Serve as Project Manager, coordinating reviews and managing public notice and schedule tracking.
- Prepare and present reports and recommendations to the Planning Commission and City Council.
- Conduct and facilitate public presentations on planning and policy discussions.
- Review building permits and improvement plans for compliance.
- Advise architects, builders, attorneys, contractors, and engineers.
- Assist Planner I and II staff.
- Attend scheduled and special meetings, including evenings.
- Perform other duties as assigned.
- Bachelor’s degree in a related field.
- Vehicle Operator’s license with satisfactory driving record.
- Knowledge of basic computer software.
- Self‑motivated and able to take initiative.
- Strong research, analytical, writing, and oral reporting skills.
- Ability to interact with the public and respond to inquiries via phone, walk‑ins, and email.
- Excellent writing skills.
- Understanding of zoning and subdivision regulations.
- Ability to read architectural plans, site plans, and technical drawings.
- Master’s degree in a related field, or Bachelor’s with four (4) years of related experience.
- Two (2) years of related experience.
- Vehicle Operator’s license with satisfactory driving record.
- Knowledge of basic computer software.
