Full‑time Veterinary Assistant (Full‑time)
Pet Vet Battlewood has been caring for Franklin’s pets since 1996! We are a five‑doctor general practice that provides a wide range of preventative and medical services. Our hospital is well equipped with in‑house lab work, digital x‑ray, ultrasound, oxygen cages and EKG services. We are a team of committed, compassionate veterinary professionals who operate with excellence and tailor each patient, client and staff member to their unique needs.
Position OverviewThe veterinary assistant supports veterinarians and technicians on a daily basis by cleaning and maintaining equipment, feeding, exercising and grooming patients, preparing and sanitizing surgery suites, restraining and handling patients, and performing clerical and administrative tasks. This role delivers quality care for all patients and provides exceptional service.
Key Responsibilities- Provide compassionate care to all patients
- Greet patients and owners, weigh patients, record vital signs
- Triage patients, perform physical exams, treatments, and administer medication under the direction of licensed veterinary technicians (LVT).
- Calm and soothe anxious patients
- Assist doctors and technicians with medication administration or patient restraint
- Perform laboratory tests and take radiographs
- Operate and maintain hospital equipment (EKG, fluid pump, syringe pump, scales, anesthetic monitors, etc.)
- Fill prescriptions, calculate and administer medications, and maintain controlled‑drug documentation
- Feed patients as prescribed, record appetites, and report abnormal conditions or behaviors
- Communicate positively with clients and ensure they feel comfortable leaving the clinic
- Educate clients about insurance, wellness, and medical plans
- Maintain cleanliness of the hospital, equipment, kennels, and facilities using appropriate chemicals; complete laundry
- Bathe and care for overnight patients; ensure each pet is clean and properly groomed before release
- Adhere to safety and wellness regulations
- Follow oral and written directions
- Maintain accurate medical records
- Arrive on time and maintain full‑time presence each shift
- Promote hospital products and services to support the organization
- Respond promptly and respectfully to directions from DVM or LVT
- Perform any other duties as assigned by the manager or within specialty areas (e.g., dentistry, surgery, emergency, radiology, cardiology, neurology, internal medicine)
- High school diploma or equivalent
- Veterinary assistant experience
- Current knowledge in veterinary practice and willingness to pursue continuing education
- Ability to restrain animals, fill prescriptions, and monitor sedation procedures
- Comfortable working with sick animals, hazardous materials, cleaning chemicals, gas anesthetics, zoonotic diseases, and unpleasant odors
- Knowledge of hospital procedures, policies, client & patient protocols, computer systems, and veterinary terminology
- Physical stamina for extended periods of standing, walking, lifting, and moving animals (up to 50 lb.)
- Surgical knowledge, catheter placement, blood drawing, and vaccine administration
- Compassionate rapport building and emotional support skills
- Judgment in animal restraint and safety protocols
- Effective communication with clients and team members
- Team orientation and collaborative task completion
- Dependability and responsibility in task completion
- Commitment to cleaning, sanitization, and sterilization policies
- High energy and productivity without prompting
- Strong time‑management skills
- Continuously learning new technical skills and knowledge
- Equipment care and maintenance practices
4 days per week from 7:30 a.m. to 6 p.m., Monday‑Friday
