SEEKING:
Don John/Dogberry: [Male, 40s-50s] Don John:
The illegitimate brother of Don Pedro and the play’s "plain-dealing villain." He is melancholic and bitter, motivated by a simple desire to cause mischief and ruin the happiness of those who have what he lacks. Dogberry:
The local Constable and master of malapropisms—using the exact wrong word for the situation. Despite his absolute incompetence and inflated ego, he (ironically) is the one who ultimately uncovers the villainous plot.
Hero/Conrad: [Female, 20s-30s] Hero:
Leonato’s daughter and the "ideal" Elizabethan woman—quiet, polite, and beautiful. While she lacks Beatrice’s fire, she possesses a gentle strength. Her character serves as the emotional heart of the play’s darker conflict when she is unjustly accused of infidelity. Conrad:
Don John’s other follower. He’s more of a "yes-man" who listens to Don John’s brooding. His main claim to fame is being called an "ass" by Dogberry (and then calling Dogberry one back).
Margaret/Antonia: [Female, 30s-40s] Margaret:
Hero’s waiting-woman and a bit of a wildcard. She is witty, and far more opinionated than Hero. She unwittingly becomes the central figure in the play’s crisis when she is mistaken for Hero while romancing Borachio. Antonia:
Leonato’s sister (and Hero’s aunt). She’s fiercely loyal and provides a touching moment of rage when she tries to challenge the much younger Claudio to a duel to defend Hero’s honor.
Leonato/Verges: [Male, 50s-60s] – Leonato:
Governor of Messina and father to Hero, who struggles with the public scandal involving his daughter. Verges:
Dogberry's elderly, confused partner in the Watch.
Borachio/Friar [Male, 30s-50s] Borachio: A follower of Don John who carries out the plan to frame Hero. Friar: A wise figure who advises that Hero feign death to clear her name.
Benedick: THIS ROLE HAS BEEN CAST. [Male, 30s-40s] An aristocratic soldier from Padua. He is a cynical bachelor who engages in a "merry war" of wits with Beatrice.
Beatrice: THIS ROLE HAS BEEN CAST. [Female 30s-40s] Leonato’s niece. She is witty, sharp-tongued, and fiercely independent, initially swearing off marriage.
Don Pedro: THIS ROLE HAS BEEN CAST. [Male 30s-50s] Prince of Aragon. A powerful nobleman who acts as a matchmaker, orchestrating the tricks that unite both couples.
Claudio: THIS ROLE HAS BEEN CAST. [Male 30s-40s] A young, honorable soldier and friend to Don Pedro. He falls for Hero but easily believes false accusations against her.
