Position Title

Swim Instructor

Immediate Supervisor

Pool Manager(s)

General Functions

Responsible for the overall instruction and safety of participants in swim lesson programs.

Essential Duties and Responsibilities
  • Instruct swimmers using best methods on proper form and style of strokes.
  • Take out and return all items needed for class.
  • Install or remove lane lines as needed.
  • Fill out skill checklist for each child.
  • Submit skill certificate for each participant to Pool Manager at end of session.
  • Work with children.
  • All other duties as assigned.
Safety and Risk Management
  • Maintains a working knowledge of all general agency and departmental‑specific safety rules.
  • Always watch participants while in the water.
  • Uses material‑handling equipment or staff assistance when lifting and/or moving objects 50 lbs. or greater.
  • Promptly reports any work‑related or patron injuries to supervisor.
  • Attends required safety program and in‑service education meetings.
  • Corrects unsafe conditions and/or reports them to supervisor.
  • Must wear a minimum of two forms of sun protection when working outside.

  • The swim instructor must be able to perform CPR, AED administration and first aid under stressful conditions.

  • Technical Skills – Must maintain CPR certifications as prescribed by the agency.
Qualifications
  • Currently 16 years of age or older. 15 with work permit.
Education and/or Experience

Less than a high school education.

Language Skills

Ability to read and comprehend simple instructions, short correspondence and memos; ability to write simple correspondence; ability to effectively present information in one‑on‑one and small‑group situations to customers, patrons and other employees.

Mathematical Skills

Ability to add and subtract two‑digit numbers and to multiply and divide with 10s and 100s; ability to perform these operations using units of American money and weight measurement, volume and distance.

Reasoning Ability

Ability to apply common sense understanding to carry out instructions furnished in written, oral or diagram form; ability to deal with problems involving several concrete variables in standardized situation.

Certifications, Licenses, Registrations

Have current Ellis and Associates Lifeguard Adult, Infant and Child CPR and Standard First Aid.
