Industrial Sewing Machine Operator
An industrial sewing machine operator utilizes a sewing machine to perform sewing operations for medical pads and restraint straps, assembling covers and restraint straps by sewing material with an industrial sewing machine to create a strong seam that can withstand regular hospital wear. Operators must adjust the sewing machines according to the specifications provided for the project, adjust machine controls, regulate stitching speeds, and possess in‑depth knowledge of industrial sewing machines.
They must also have good hand‑eye coordination and be able to cope with moderate physical effort.
- Start and operate an industrial sewing machine that automatically joins or reinforces material or restraint strap material.
- Identify the purchase order next in the production sequence.
- Draw thread through guides, tensions, and needles; and adjust the sewing machine’s functions according to the fabric type.
- Position items under the needle, using markings on fabric or the edge of fabric as guides.
- Turn knobs, screws, and dials to adjust sewing machine settings according to the current project and operation observation.
- Guide material under the sewing machine needle and presser foot to sew material together.
- Perform top stitching and closing seams on boot pads, feeding foam and fabric beneath the sewing machine presser foot, and use the top stitched machine training as needed.
- Repair missing stitches or unsatisfactory sewing work as directed by the supervisor.
- Observe sewing machine operation to detect any stitching or machine malfunction and notify the supervisor.
- Keep the machine in good working order, maintain a neat and tidy workstation, oil the sewing machine bobbin, and change needles as required.
- Identify discrepant material and follow the non‑conforming process.
- Basic oral and written comprehension of the English language.
- Basic math skills.
- Detail‑oriented.
- Good hand‑eye coordination.
- Ability to sit for 8 hours or more on a daily basis.
- Able to follow directions.
- Can adapt to a fast‑paced environment.
- Knowledge of how an industrial sewing machine functions.
- Previous industrial sewing experience.
- Ability to use measuring tools.
- Knowledge of purchase order priority.
- Capability to read and understand a blueprint.
- Sitting for extended periods of time.
- Performing repetitive tasks daily.
- Using hands and wrists to feed fabric and/or foam and fabric under a presser foot with moderate pressure.
