Job DescriptionThe Sr. Materials Technician will conduct testing and experiments, write technical reports, support test request workflow, operate equipment in the materials characterization and testing labs, maintain calibration of equipment, and ensure compliance with client quality policies and safety regulations. The position involves batch mixing, compounding, and extruding of materials, data interpretation, process improvement, supply stock management, chemical inventory oversight, and continuous improvement projects in areas such as equipment troubleshooting, procedure development, and lab upgrades.
Job Responsibilities- Perform batch mixing, compounding and extruding of various material types
- Interpret data to draw conclusions, identify trends, and provide solutions
- Participate in problem‑solving and improvement of test plans
- Oversee lab supplies stock, reorder supplies, and act as primary purchase order processor
- Manage chemical inventory and MSDS upkeep, ensuring timely removal of expired chemicals
- Communicate relevant and accurate information in a timely manner to enable effective decision‑making
- Submit final data to requesters and archive results with lab technicians
- Execute Continuous Improvement projects including equipment or method troubleshooting/repairs, facility upgrades, fixture development and maintenance
- Develop and maintain materials lab capability operating procedures
- Coordinate equipment upgrades and installation
- Mentor/supervise junior technicians (minimal supervisory assistance)
- Provide direction and add value on subject matter expertise
- Work under general supervision with limited technical and practical knowledge required for test method development and statistical analysis and report generation
- Bachelor's Degree in a Science or Engineering discipline with a minimum of 2 years of laboratory experience
- Knowledge of mechanical measurement equipment (e.g., Instron) and at least two materials characterization capabilities (e.g., Coefficient of Friction, FTIR, SEM/EDS, DSC, TGA)
- Experience with polymer compounding (extrusion, batch mixing) and polymer processing (Injection Molding, compression molding, batch mixing)
- Superior written and oral communication skills
- Proficiency in MS Office (Word, Excel, PowerPoint)
- Knowledge of statistical analysis desirable
- Superior attention to detail
- Understanding of regulatory and quality requirements and external regulations (ISO, FDA, OSHA, ASTM)
- Maintains good laboratory practices
- Ability to lift resin barrels when needed
