Job Summary

Sr. Materials Technician understands and can discuss materials lab capabilities, terminology and concepts. In the Materials R&D group, the Sr. Technician will be responsible for conducting testing/experiments; writing technical reports; supporting test request workflow; operating equipment in the materials characterization and testing labs; ensuring compliance with client quality policies, supporting lab audits, maintaining calibration of equipment and overall health of the labs.

The Sr. Technician understands procedures and practices through appropriate communication, training and education of sound quality assurance principles; ensuring compliance with all local, state, federal and client safety regulations, policies and procedures.

Responsibilities
  • Performs batch mixing, compounding and extruding of various material types.
  • Interpret data to draw conclusions, identify trends and provide solutions.
  • Involved in problem‑solving and improvement of test plans.
  • Oversees lab supplies stock and reordering, acts as primary purchase order processor.
  • Manages the chemical inventory and MSDS upkeep. Ensures timely removal of expired chemicals.
  • Finds common ground within a team to optimize problem‑solving outcomes.
  • Communicates relevant and accurate information in a timely manner to enable effective decision‑making.
  • Submits final data to requester and/or archives it in conjunction with lab technicians.
  • Executes continuous improvement projects such as equipment or method troubleshooting/repairs, establishes materials lab capability operating procedures, coordinates equipment upgrades and installation, and maintains fixture development.
  • Works under general supervision with minimal supervisory assistance and may mentor/supervise junior technicians.
  • Applies limited technical and practical knowledge of test method development, statistical analysis and test report generation.
Qualifications
  • Bachelor’s Degree in a Science or Engineering discipline with a minimum of 2 years of laboratory experience.
  • Knowledge of the operation of mechanical measurement equipment (e.g., Instron) and two or more materials characterization capabilities (Coefficient of Friction, FTIR, SEM/EDS, DSC, TGA).
  • Experience with polymer compounding (extrusion, batch mixing) and polymer processing (Injection Molding, compression molding and batch mixing).
  • Superior communication skills, both written and oral.
  • Proficient in MS Office (Word, Excel, PowerPoint).
  • Knowledge of statistical analysis desirable.
  • Superior attention to detail.
  • Understanding of regulatory and quality requirements and external regulations (ISO, FDA, OSHA, ASTM).
  • Maintains good laboratory practices.
  • May require some lifting of resin barrels.
Additional Knowledge and Skills
  • May establish materials lab capability operating procedures.
  • Coordinates equipment upgrades and installation.
  • Fixture development and maintenance.
  • Adds value and provides direction on the subject matter.
  • Has limited understanding on how to organize people and activities.
  • Has practical and technical knowledge of small hand tools and/or precision devices to aid in testing.
  • Has practical and technical knowledge of other common lab instrumentation and equipment.
  • Accountable for lab operations, calibration and maintenance of equipment.
  • Has limited understanding of Code of Federal Regulations (CFR) Title 21 rules and procedures for Current Good Laboratory Practices (cGLP).
  • Has general understanding of R&D lab maintenance and housekeeping requirements.
  • Understands training regimen for lab procedures, preventive maintenance and calibration.
  • Is encouraged to develop/seek out new industry, company, product or technical knowledge.
