The R&D team is seeking an exceptionally talented and passionate Senior Materials Scientist to help identify and implement materials science and engineering driven innovative solutions for current and future health care needs within BD Medication Delivery Solutions (MDS). The successful candidate will be part of the Materials Science team in Franklin Lakes, NJ, reporting to the Associate Director, Materials Science.

• Lead materials and/or characterization projects using materials science and engineering analyses, Design of Experiments (DOEs), protocols and best practices.
• Stay abreast of potential new technologies to enable new material designs.
• Design, develop and improve materials related to BD products.
• Leverage existing materials technologies to advance core businesses while supporting new product development.
• Collaborate on evaluating competitive products, processes, technologies and trends.
• Define material properties and requirements to meet product specifications.
• Assist transfer of new technologies from R&D to manufacturing.
• Employ the scientific method to identify problems or risks and deliver effective solutions within project timelines.
• Seek training opportunities and promote learning within the organization.
• Maintain frequent formal and informal communication within the team.
• Provide direction for junior engineers and technicians as appropriate.
• Work independently and within a multifunctional team.
• Ensure compliance with BD quality policies, procedures and practices through communication, training and education of quality assurance principles.

• B.Sc. in Materials Science, Chemistry, Chemical Engineering or related field with at least 4 years relevant experience; M.Sc. with 2 years; or Ph.D. (preferred).
• Excellent analytical, problem‑solving and learning skills.
• Strong written and oral communication.
• Deep understanding of materials structure–property relationships.
• Experience in materials science/engineering within medical devices, pharmaceuticals or a regulated industry.
• Laboratory experience in materials characterization and adaptability of procedures.
• Team collaboration across functions and levels.
• Statistical analysis experience supporting work.
• Experience with scale‑up and transfer of materials technologies to manufacturing.
• Test protocol generation, execution and reporting.
• Basic project‑management knowledge for new product development.
• Ability to manage multiple priorities in a fast‑paced environment.
• Understanding of design control processes and regulatory/quality requirements (ISO, FDA, OSHA, ASTM).
