The Department of Alcoholic Beverage Control (Department) Legal Division is looking for someone with the highest level of professionalism, integrity, and excellence to become part of its dedicated and positive team. The Legal Division provides outstanding legal services to the Department, which licenses and regulates alcoholic beverage manufacturing, distribution, trafficking, storage, and sales in Kentucky.
The Legal Division represents the Department in administrative hearings and court litigation across the state; drafts and guides passage of all administrative regulations, drafts legislative bills, drafts significant documents for the agency, provides legal advice to agency employees, and counsels agency representatives on alcoholic beverage, tobacco, nicotine, and vapor product laws important to their responsibilities to industry representatives and the public.

Responsibilities- Performing complex independent assignments from the General Counsel and staff attorneys, including researching, analyzing, and drafting legal documents in complex cases at all stages of the Department’s legal matters;
- Analyze and respond to Open Records Requests under the supervision of the General Counsel;
- Perform clerical tasks related to the Department’s legal work, including drafting correspondence, mailing, filing, and organizing; and
- Keeping up to date on changes in departmental regulations as well as state and federal law.
Skills and Abilities
- Has a positive attitude and is a self-starter.
- Is professional, competent, organized, and polite.
- Meets necessary educational requirements or experience substitute.
- Has work-related experience in alcoholic beverage law, administrative law and, or, litigation.
EDUCATION: Graduate of a college or university with a bachelor's degree in paralegal science or a bachelor's degree with a minor in paralegal studies OR two-year program in paralegal studies OR post-baccalaureate certificate in paralegal studies.
EXPERIENCE, TRAINING, OR
SKILLS:
Four years of experience as a paralegal or legal secretary.
Substitute EDUCATION for
EXPERIENCE:
A Juris Doctorate or a law degree from a college of law will substitute for the education and experience requirement.
Substitute EXPERIENCE for
EDUCATION:
Experience as a paralegal or legal secretary will substitute for the bachelor's degree on a year-for-year basis.

Working ConditionsIncumbents working in this job title primarily perform duties in an office setting. Travel is required.
Probationary PeriodThis job has an initial and promotional probationary period of 6 months, except as provided in KRS 18A.111.
