Job SummaryThe School of Nursing at KSU serves all students to provide seamless, robust, focused, and comprehensive educational support. The Full‑Time Nursing Advisor will join a team of outstanding individuals with diverse professional and personal backgrounds in the School of Nursing who form a high‑functioning community of practice. The Full‑Time Nursing Advisor will provide personalized, one‑on‑one support in navigating the road to academic success, while staying on track toward degree completion.
EssentialJob Functions
- Serve as nursing advisor and interface with representatives of industrial, governmental, and educational employers to assist in the most effective use of career services efforts; also support marketing of other School of Nursing and departmental efforts.
- Coordinate communication with deans, department chairs, and faculty to ensure the School of Nursing meets the needs of academic colleges and departments within staff and financial limits.
- Monitor, analyze, and evaluate the current scope of services offered, and plan, implement, and direct new programs under the supervision of the dean of student development and services and in coordination with other student services directors.
- Provide career‑advising expertise to nursing students and alumni on job‑search processes, interviewing, resume, letter writing, and all facets of career planning.
- Conduct personalized academic advising meetings to assist nursing students with course selection and graduation plans tailored to their interests and goals.
- Assist with major selection and fulfillment of curriculum requirements.
- Help students understand School of Nursing requirements.
- Assist with course selection and registration.
- Monitor academic progress.
- Assist with transition issues and provide referrals to campus resources.
- Assist with retention programming efforts.
- Represent the School of Nursing and/or the Center for Student Success at open houses, admission events, and other functions as needed.
- Superior listening and critical thinking skills with the ability to multi‑task.
- Experience with retention data collection and reporting.
- Working knowledge of postsecondary academic advising and retention strategies.
- Knowledge of student services, enrollment services, academic policies, and university procedures at Kentucky State University, or the ability to learn quickly.
- Strong interpersonal/human relations skills.
- Ability to initiate and maintain professional relationships with diverse groups, demonstrating sensitivity to the needs of a diverse student population (low‑income, first‑generation, students of color, disabled, underrepresented, older, non‑traditional, and international students).
- Excellent verbal and written communication skills.
- Ability to maintain confidentiality.
- Attention to detail.
- Basic skills in productivity software (Word, PowerPoint, Outlook, Excel).
- Ability to collect, analyze, and report retention‑related data.
- Capacity to multi‑task, prioritize, manage multiple priorities, and meet deadlines.
- Excellent organizational skills and ability to work in a fast‑paced environment.
- Ability to interpret and communicate university policies and procedures and associated federal and state regulations.
- Flexible schedule, including some evenings or weekends as required.
This position does not have supervisory responsibility.
Other DutiesDuties may change or be assigned based on institutional needs.
Qualifications- Bachelor’s degree (required), Master’s Degree (preferred).
- 1–2 years’ experience working in higher education.
- Work is normally performed in a typical interior and/or office work environment.
- Ability to travel for recruiting students.
- Minimal physical effort; occasional lifting of materials under 25 lbs may be necessary.
- Ability to remain in a stationary position for extended periods; frequent communication with students and staff via phone, email, and in person.
- Ability to operate a computer and other office equipment.
- Ability to assess and respond to student needs with sound judgment and discretion.
- Attention to detail and ability to manage multiple priorities with frequent interruptions.
