Job Summary

We are looking for an experienced and strategic leader to join our client as the Head of Business Development, Mergers & Acquisitions (M&A). This role offers a unique opportunity to shape and drive our M&A strategy while overseeing the transition of responsibilities from the co-founder, who will retire in the next 18 months.

Initially, you will manage the existing M&A team, oversee project management for ongoing processes, and collaborate with key stakeholders to ensure smooth integration. Over time, you will take on a more proactive role in identifying and evaluating strategic acquisition opportunities, including customer list purchases, to support the company's growth objectives.

As a key member of the leadership team, you will work closely with the CEO and cross-functional leaders to ensure every acquisition aligns with the company's growth vision and strengthens their service offerings. This role is ideal for a results-driven, dynamic leader with extensive M&A experience, strong negotiation skills, and a proven ability to lead in a fast-paced environment.

Key Responsibilities
  • M&A Strategy & Execution:
    Learn the business from the co-founder and lead a metrics-driven sales process to close deals quickly.
  • Develop and execute strategic M&A initiatives aligned with company's growth objectives.
  • Build and maintain a robust pipeline of acquisition opportunities through active prospecting and networking.
  • Innovate acquisition strategies to drive revenue growth and expand market presence.
Leadership & Collaboration
  • Manage and develop the M&A team, ensuring seamless execution across all deal phases.
  • Collaborate with cross-functional leaders in product, marketing, and technology to align M&A activities with corporate goals.
  • Oversee end-to-end deal processes, from market analysis and sourcing to post-acquisition integration.
  • Ensure successful post-acquisition integration, optimizing operational and financial performance.
  • Uphold high ethical standards and integrity in all business dealings.
Deal Management
  • Lead the full lifecycle of M&A transactions, including sourcing, negotiation, closing, and integration.
  • Partner with the CFO to refine negotiation strategies and closing playbooks for balanced deals.
  • Assess potential sellers' objectives and develop compelling value propositions for transactions.
  • Build relationships with referral sources and industry influencers to generate acquisition leads.
  • Conduct discovery meetings to evaluate acquisition suitability.
  • Refine internal systems to monitor deal performance and key metrics.
Qualifications Leadership & Management
  • Proven experience leading and managing M&A or business development teams, ideally in small business environments.
  • Strong critical thinking, problem-solving, and decision-making skills.
  • Exceptional communication skills, with the ability to balance competing priorities and deadlines.
  • Comfortable working as a Player/Coach in a fast-growing, dynamic environment.
Strategic Expertise
  • Intellectually curious, with a willingness to learn small business M&A and industry dynamics.
  • Demonstrated ability to optimize processes and implement innovative strategies.
  • Experience in human capital management, payroll services, banking, private equity, or related industries preferred.
  • Established network for deal sourcing and business development.
Communication & Collaboration
  • Excellent interpersonal and communication skills, with the ability to present complex information clearly.
  • Proven ability to build and maintain relationships with internal and external stakeholders.
  • Ability to maintain integrity and professionalism, even in high-pressure situations.
Education & Experience
  • Minimum of 10 years in business development, including at least 5 years managing an M&A or business development team.
  • Bachelor's degree in finance or business required; MBA preferred but not mandatory.
  • Ability to travel up to 25%, with flexibility during peak periods, to foster relationships with sellers, brokers, and industry leaders.
