Position: Emergency Vehicle Technician I

Job Summary

Under direction, delivers technical services to telecommunication systems, computer systems, networking infrastructure environments, and wireless systems; performs support for various software applications; performs related work as required.

Examples of Duties
  • Performs problem determination, assistance, configuration, and technical support for telecommunications and related functions including PBX, telephone desk sets, cell phones, and Black Berrys;
  • Performs problem determination, assistance, configuration, and technical support for wireless communications and related functions including access points, wireless access cards, security and surveillance cameras;
  • Performs problem determination, assistance, configuration, and technical support for networking infrastructure and related functions including standalone servers, and VMware servers;
  • Aids in the process of maintaining a software/hardware inventory;
  • Performs limited hardware maintenance and repairs on printers, computers, and other peripherals;
  • Supports the Help Desk staff; captures pertinent call information in the Help Desk database; analyzes trends in reported calls and offers solutions in evaluated areas;
  • Provides solutions to user problems over the telephone and through remote control of computers; offers remedies to recurring problems in the way of upgrades, training, replacement software or hardware, telephones, cell phones, access points, Black Berrys, components, etc.;
  • Determines cause of error or system failure and applies corrective steps or standard operational techniques in cases where error or system failure can be corrected;
  • Adjusts system configurations to Active Directory as necessitated by user requests, changes, additions, and deletions of users and/or workstations;
  • Administers network shares and permissions on a Microsoft network;
  • Assembles, tests, configures, delivers, and installs personal computers, personal computer software, telephones, cell phones, access points, Black Berrys, wireless cards, components, and peripherals;
  • Provides documentation of problems and methods used for solving/correcting those problems by utilizing the on-line system for hardware, software, telephone, cell phone, access points, Black Berrys, wireless cards, etc.;
  • Assists in the preparation of the estimates of time, equipment, personnel and total costs of recommended changes, enhancements, upgrades, and etc. for solutions to problems and projects;
  • Serves as point of contact for service/repair to telephones, cell phones, Black Berrys, wireless cards, etc.;
  • Programs cell phones, Black Berrys, wireless cards, and telephones; resets voicemail passwords;
  • Maintains contact list, battery and accessory replacements, audits cell phone billing, creates monthly local and long distance usage reports;
  • Configures wireless profiles for internal access on Police, Fire/Rescue, and other City employees’ laptops;
  • Manages land lines to include moves, adds, and changes;
  • Performs GIS data updates, distribution, and sharing functions as appropriate;
  • Provides technical assistance to related staff and citizens on GIS matters;
  • Develops cartographic products and tabular reports from GIS databases as appropriate;
  • Develops and updates related GIS procedures and documentation;
  • Builds GIS data layers and corresponding metadata to support the GIS development;
  • Supports other departments with the generation of various production maps;
  • Performs other related duties as required.
Minimum Qualifications

Education and Experience:

  • Graduation from an accredited college or university with a bachelor’s degree in computer science or closely related field and three years related work experience; or
  • Graduation from an accredited college or university with an associate’s degree in computer science or closely related field and five years related work experience; and
  • Minimum of three years experience with personal computers in a support/user environment utilizing the hardware and software (described below); experience with Microsoft networks; some experience with teaching software/hardware techniques to users; some experience with IBM's AS/400.
