Coastline College, a community college located just outside of Los Angeles in Orange County, California, has been an innovative leader in traditional and non‑traditional delivery of education since its birth in 1976.

Student Assistant Program OverviewStudent Assistants are non‑academic, non‑classified employees who work under immediate or general supervision. They perform a range of duties from unskilled to skilled and are not part of the classified service. They are at‑will employees, no entitlement rights, and not benefit eligible.
Hours:
19.5 hours per week during the fall and spring semesters
; up to 28 hours per week outside those semesters
. A student may not be employed in any other capacity within the same fiscal year.
- Student Assistant I – Entry Level/Semi‑Skilled: Work under immediate supervision; routine, repetitive tasks; use of special equipment or software as directed; supervisor manages workflow and provides specific instructions.
- Student Assistant II – Intermediate/Advanced: Work under general supervision; tasks are less routine, require moderate independent judgment, and may involve sophisticated data systems and confidential information; expects at least one year of experience in a similar assignment.
- Student Assistant III – Specialist/Lead: Work under general supervision; broad, varied tasks; requires substantial independent judgment; may direct lower‑level student employees; requires a minimum of two years of experience in a similar assignment.
- Must be a full‑time student enrolled in at least 12 units at one of the Coast Community College District colleges.
- Students must fulfill EEO and diversity commitments (DEIA).
- Education/experience requirements vary by level: no prior experience for Level I; some prior experience or knowledge for Level II; prior experience or specialized skills for Level III.
- Students may not exceed the hourly limits and may not hold another position in the district during the same fiscal year.
Student Assistants are at‑will employees, not part of the classified service, and do not receive benefits. Employment is contingent upon verification of class schedule, background checks, and approval by the District Board of Trustees. Regular attendance is essential; failure to comply may result in termination.
Applicants must provide fingerprints via Live Scan at their own expense, proof of eligibility to work in the United States, and complete a new‑hire onboarding appointment.
