DescriptionMoose Media is looking to find the next person to lead the newsroom of Moose FM and You’ll oversee a team of four reporters focused on Fort St. John, B.C. and the rest of Northeast B.C. Moose Media owns and operates the local radio station Moose FM and the local news site Together, the radio station and website are community leaders in news coverage and operate the largest newsroom in Northeast B.C. This role requires a keen understanding of current events, the ability to make quick and accurate editorial decisions, especially during breaking news, and the skill to edit and refine news stories.
The News Editor is also responsible for guiding a team of reporters, ensuring that content is informative, engaging, and aligns with the digital media strategies pertinent to Moose Media’s audience. Moose Media is a locally owned and operated media company in Fort St. John, which gives us the freedom to create the best content possible for our community. While other newsrooms in the industry are shrinking, we have grown our team by doubling the size of our newsroom since 2020, and we don’t plan to stop there.
- Collaborate closely with the Program Director for Moose FM to oversee the production of radio newscasts and other news programming, like our weekly talk show.
- Run daily editorial meetings and assign stories throughout the day.

- Fostering a newsroom culture that is agile and responsive, capable of quickly mobilizing resources to cover breaking news and developing stories, thereby keeping our audience informed in real-time.
- Help generate additional news coverage for special events such as elections and community meetings.
- Train, coach, and mentor all news staff.
- Cover meetings, local events, and seasonal activities/beat as schedule allows.
- Work on-call as needed for breaking news.
- Streamline news processes for efficient newsroom workflow and training.

- You will need several years of experience in journalism, with a significant portion of that time spent in news reporting or editing. Previous experience in a management/leadership role would be considered an asset.
- Experience with website content management systems.
- Experience in overseeing the creation and curation of news content, including written articles, video, and podcasts, will be considered an asset.
- Understanding digital media trends, SEO, social media, and multimedia journalism is crucial to this role.
- Must be social media- and computer-savvy.
- Valid driver's licence and vehicle.
An annual salary of $60,000 to $70,000, depending on previous experience. You will also have access to additional employee benefits, including gym memberships and extended medical coverage. You will also receive three weeks of paid annual vacation and all statutory holidays (some on-call coverage may be needed on weekends).
