Job Summary

Dispatcher – Transportation. Reports to Supervisor – Bus Lot. Grade 804. 244 days. Salary: $40,992 - $49,386. FLSA Status:
Non‑exempt.

Position Purpose

Under general supervision, collaborate, establish, and coordinate the assignment, scheduling, and routing of all transportation buses and drivers/bus attendants charged with the safe and efficient operation of a comprehensive school bus operation. Coordinate bus operations by dispatching buses during regularly scheduled runs, and when interrupted by mechanical breakdown, accident, obstruction of traffic flow, or other situations that may affect operations within the established time schedules.

Notify drivers of any changes affecting routes. Communicate with parents and school administrators regarding students and bus concerns. Assist in preparing reports, letters, and data entry, in addition to maintaining a variety of department records.

Essential Job Functions Dispatch & Coordinate Operations
  • Dispatch buses during regularly scheduled operations.
  • Dispatch buses interrupted by mechanical breakdown, accident, obstruction of traffic flow, or other situations that may affect operations.
  • Reference Mapsco books and Map Quest online software to guide or re‑route drivers in unpredictable situations.
  • Review daily field trip logs and enter adjustments to accommodate changes.
  • Maintain and distribute logs for scheduled runs, field trips, and special assignments.
  • Update the Kronos time‑clock system by entering and switching drivers and attendants to the appropriate scheduled pay at the time of duty.
Phones & Communication
  • Answer incoming calls from employees, community members, and others, provide general information, take reliable messages, and refer callers as appropriate.
  • Operate two‑way radio and other office equipment to facilitate communications.
  • Dispatch extra vehicles or Safety Officers to the scene of an accident or breakdown.
  • Notify police department, fire department, and ambulance service of accidents or incidents on buses.
  • Notify appropriate District medical staff and Safety & Security staff regarding accidents or incidents on buses.
  • Notify school administrators of bus delays (weather, accidents, road construction, etc.).
  • Maintain confidentiality.
Reporting, Correspondence & Inventory
  • Prepare reports and take appropriate action regarding accidents or other incidents that delay timely delivery of students.
  • Arrange and coordinate meetings and conferences; maintain the calendar of meetings and prepare follow‑up materials.
  • Maintain inventory of fixed assets, equipment, and supplies.
Safety
  • Perform preventive maintenance on tools and equipment and ensure equipment is in safe operating condition.
  • Follow established safety procedures and techniques to perform job duties, including lifting and climbing; operate tools and equipment according to established safety procedures.
  • Correct unsafe conditions in the work area and promptly report any conditions that are not immediately correctable to the supervisor.
