Position: Supervisory Recreation Specialist (Aquatics Coordinator)

Summary

This position is assigned to the Non-Appropriated Fund (NAF) Fitness Division, Morale, Welfare, and Recreation Department, Naval Air Station JRB Fort Worth, Texas. Incumbent serves as a Supervisory Recreation Specialist responsible for the supervision, coordination, and economical operation of one pool. The purpose of this position is to ensure that all aquatics programs and activities operate efficiently and safely according to rules, regulations, and standard operating procedures.

Responsibilities
  • Oversees the operation of one pool, along with all associated aquatics programs including swim lessons, parties, special events, camps, swim team, swim meets, PRT, and all related activities.
  • Reviews patron usage and assesses program needs.
  • Researches and recommends additions and/or changes to current programming providing data to substantiate.
  • Ensures all aquatics programs are suited to site patronage and within facility limitations while meeting all time and financial constraints.
  • Responsible for running a well‑rounded and comprehensive aquatics program for Active‑Duty, Active‑Duty family members, Retirees, Retiree family members, and DoD Civilians.
  • Oversees maintenance of the pool, pool facilities, pump house and equipment in support of the aquatics program.
  • Maintains accurate maintenance records and ensures proper water chemistry through consistent monitoring.
  • Maintains internal controls over all aquatic facilities, equipment, vehicles, supplies, and fees.
  • Administers all safety programs related to an aquatic operation and maintains a safe and healthful environment for all patrons and aquatics personnel.
  • Assists in the preparation and administration of the annual aquatics budget.
  • Prepares all necessary paperwork and documentation used in the purchase of supplies and equipment in support of the aquatic operation.
  • Oversees day‑to‑day operation of the pool, programs, and staff, both seasonal and year‑round.
  • Ensures that all lifeguards and Water Safety Instructors (WSI) maintain up‑to‑date required training certifications and can execute emergency action plans.
  • Administers written and practical water safety tests to ensure the qualifications of lifeguards and instructors assigned to the swimming pool and beaches.
  • Recruitment, interviewing, selection, orientation, training and evaluating performance; counsels, issues basic disciplinary actions, recommends awards and approves leave.
  • Operates the swimming lesson program, including planning, implementation, compliance with American Red Cross standards, maintaining records and reporting data to the Red Cross.
  • Monitors the handling of funds and ensures that the DAR's are properly submitted.
  • Performs lifeguarding duties.
  • Conducts Red Cross CPR/AED and first aid training for all MWR Fort Worth Fitness, Sports and Aquatics Division staff as required.
  • Assists in other Fitness, Sports, and Aquatics Division events as well as MWR Fort Worth events as assigned.
  • Performs other duties as assigned.
Supervisory Controls

Works under the supervision of the Fitness Director. Incumbent uses initiative in completing daily/routine assignments and receives general guidance. Work is subject to periodic spot checks. Supervisor provides advice/guidance regarding special problems or unusual situations.

Knowledge Required By The Position
  • Ability to carry out aquatics program competently and independently through the proper application of principles, concepts, and techniques of recreation to satisfy specific needs of the community to be served.
  • Skill in planning and carrying out an enhanced programming in aquatics which meets the needs of the participating community.
  • Knowledge of effective lifeguarding procedures and techniques.
  • Skill in performing and teaching techniques of swimming and lifesaving.
  • Knowledge of principles and techniques of maintaining proper water chemistry and machinery.
  • Ability to learn and comply with all Navy Health and Safety requirements as well as program policies and procedures.
  • Ability to develop and effectively deliver presentations and/or trainings.
  • Ability to communicate well both verbally and in writing.
