Heavy Equipment Operator

The Heavy Equipment Operator is an entry level position in the construction, maintenance and repair of electrical transmission systems. This position works at various locations and may require travel to another state depending on customer demands.

• Work safely while performing new construction, maintenance or repair work of energized and de‑energized overhead work.
• String overhead wire.
• Set poles and anchors.
• Assist with installing transformers, lightning arrestors, cutouts, crossarms, insulators, switches and switch gear.
• Assist in replacing fuses in transformers and clear faulted circuits and systems.
• Frequently work with energized high‑voltage systems requiring skill and care to protect occupants.
• Maintain company vehicles, equipment and tools in good working order.
• Perform rigorous physical labor.
• Use company radio properly.
• Operate heavy equipment.
• Understand basic rigging, hand lines, and lineman knot tying.
• Use and maintain hand tools.
• Receive and follow directions.
• Learn basic knowledge of materials used in line work.
• Identify primary and secondary voltage on a circuit.
• Familiarize with induced voltage.
• Assist in installation and hook up of a single‑phase transformer.
• Perform basic bucket rescue/escape.
• Understand equipment set up and grounding.
• Work at heights and/or confined spaces.
• Understand minimum approach distance.
• Check voltage on transformers.
• Follow flag and tag procedures.
• Install and remove a service.
• Inspect rubber goods and PPE properly.
• Wear personnel protective equipment when necessary.
• Make up and use a hand line.
• Use Kellum grips when applicable.
• Identify different types of materials used in line work.
• Work outdoors, frequently in inclement weather.
• Glove and work on high‑voltage transmission lines.
• Complete other related work as required.

• Minimum 2+ years of experience.
• Read and communicate effectively in English.
• Obtain a Commercial Driver’s License permit within 60 days of employment.
• Commercial Driver’s License preferred.
• Travel long distances on short notice when required.
• Work for extended periods in various locations when required.
• Lift in excess of 50 lbs.
• Inspect rubber goods and PPE properly.
• Work overtime when requested.
• Work outside of normal schedule including weekends, holidays, and overtime as required.

High School/GED

The physical demands described here are representative of those that must be met by an employee to successfully perform the essential functions of this job. The employee is regularly required to talk or hear. They are frequently required to stand; walk; use hands to finger, handle and feel; and reach with hands and arms.

The employee is frequently exposed to fumes or airborne particles, moving mechanical parts, and vibration. They are occasionally exposed to a variety of extreme conditions at construction job sites. The noise level in the work environment and job sites can be loud. This position is performed in outdoor weather conditions.
