OverallJob Summary
This position is responsible for assisting the Store Manager and Assistant Store Manager with the execution of operational, sales, and merchandising objectives by providing outstanding customer service. It also ensures a safe and productive work environment for team members, customers, and vendors while training team members on the application of company policies and procedures.
Essential Duties and Responsibilities (Min 5%)Availability, flexibility, adaptability, and a service‑oriented mindset are essential. Employees must:
- Maintain regular and predictable attendance.
- Work scheduled shifts and handle varied hours, including nights, weekends, and overtime as needed.
- Uphold and enforce workplace safety and policies.
- Support selling initiatives (TEAM):
- Thank the Customer
- Engage with the customer and/or pet
- Advise on products or services
- Make it memorable
- Perform assignments during 95% of the workday, including but not limited to:
- Merchandising activities (basic, promotional, seasonal).
- Opening/closing procedures.
- Transporting money to the bank.
- Assessing store conditions and allocating duties.
- Organizing workflow via the daily planner.
- Recovering merchandise.
- Participating in mandatory freight processes.
- Conducting price change activities.
- Resolving customer complaints and ensuring a positive experience.
- Adhering to loss prevention standards and responding to alarms.
- Communicating financial goals and responsibilities to team members.
- Operating the cash register/computer and supervising cash handling.
- Assisting team members with policies and procedures.
- Ensuring animal safety, sanitizing holding tanks, and caring for live animals.
- Completing documentation for all duties.
May be required to perform other duties as assigned.
Experience:
Retail experience and/or pet/live animal knowledge is strongly preferred. Supervisory experience preferred. Must be at least 18 years old and possess a valid driver’s license.
Education:
A high‑school diploma or equivalent is preferred, but not required. All team members must read, write, and count accurately.
- Pet/Live Animal, pet food, and product knowledge is strongly preferred.
- Strong interpersonal skills and the ability to resolve issues ethically with minimal conflict.
- Basic computer skills.
- Ability to perform and execute the principal responsibilities of a team member.
- Moderate noise in indoor and hard‑surface outdoor lots. Adequate lighting and temperature.
- Work shifts vary but are generally no less than 4 hours and may exceed 8 hours.
- Focus on a safe and productive environment while adhering to company safety training and guidelines.
- Non‑sedentary role requiring physical and mental stamina.
- Operate equipment safely and efficiently.
- Lift or reach merchandise overhead occasionally.
- Stand, kneel, twist, crouch, squat, bend, stoop, and climb ladders frequently.
- Move throughout the store for an entire shift.
- Access all areas of the store including selling floor, side lot, stock area, and register area.
- Operate computer, cash register, and other store equipment.
- Read, write, and count accurately for documentation.
- Communicate effectively with team members and customers.
- Process merchandise through the point‑of‑sale system.
- Handle contact with birds/poultry.
- Move and transfer live animals, equipment, and merchandise up to 50 pounds.
- Complete required training and certification.
- Travel as needed to support district requirements.
- Drive or operate a vehicle for business needs.
- Lift 50+ pounds.
